About

Leonard Simon Nimoy was born on March 26, 1931, in the West End of Boston, Massachusetts, to Jewish immigrant parents who had emigrated separately from Iziaslav, Ukraine. His father, Max Nimoy, owned a barbershop in the Mattapan section of Boston, and his mother, Dora, worked as a homemaker. Nimoy had an elder brother, Melvin. As a child, he took on various jobs to help support the family, including selling newspapers, shining shoes, and setting up chairs in theaters. He began acting at age eight in a children's and neighborhood theater, and his first significant role came at seventeen, when he played Ralphie in an amateur production of Clifford Odets's Awake and Sing! He also developed his singing voice through his synagogue's choir, and his bar mitzvah performance at age thirteen was well regarded enough that he was invited to repeat it at another synagogue the following week.

Nimoy studied drama at Boston College before relocating to Los Angeles, where he used savings from selling vacuum cleaners to enroll at the Pasadena Playhouse. He left after six months, feeling his existing skills exceeded what the program offered. He became a devoted practitioner of method acting rooted in the teachings of Konstantin Stanislavsky. In 1953, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve at Fort McPherson, Georgia, serving for eighteen months and leaving as a staff sergeant. His service was in the Army Special Services, an entertainment branch of the military, during which he wrote, narrated, and emceed shows. He also directed and starred in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire with the Atlanta Theater Guild during this period.

Throughout the 1950s, Nimoy made minor film and television appearances, playing small parts in B movies and television series including Perry Mason and Dragnet, as well as the serial Zombies of the Stratosphere. He originated the role of Spock in the Star Trek television pilot in 1964 and continued developing the character through the series' run, which ended in early 1969. His portrayal earned him three Emmy Award nominations and made a significant cultural impact. He went on to reprise the role in Star Trek: The Animated Series, the first six Star Trek films, and guest appearances in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He also directed two entries in the film franchise, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock in 1984 and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home in 1986. In 2009, he appeared alongside Zachary Quinto in J. J. Abrams's Star Trek reboot, playing an elder version of Spock, and his final appearance as the character came in the 2013 sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. In 2010, Nimoy announced his retirement from the role, citing his age and his wish to allow Quinto full attention as the character.

Beyond Star Trek, Nimoy directed the 1987 film Three Men and a Baby, starred in Mission: Impossible for two seasons following the original series, and hosted the documentary series In Search of.... He also appeared in Columbo. From 1967 to 1970, he pursued a music career with Dot Records, releasing albums largely recorded in character as Spock. His public identification with Spock was so pronounced that both of his autobiographies, I Am Not Spock published in 1975 and I Am Spock published in 1995, were written from the perspective of coexistence with the character.

Nimoy's stage work brought him to Broadway between 1973 and 1976, where he appeared in three productions. His Broadway credits included Full Circle, the play Sherlock Holmes, and Equus. These appearances were among what contemporaries noted as well-received stage performances. In addition to acting and filmmaking, Nimoy worked as a photographer, author, singer, and songwriter. Following his death on February 27, 2015, from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, his son Adam produced the documentary For the Love of Spock in 2016, and his daughter Julie produced Remembering Leonard Nimoy in 2017. An asteroid was designated 4864 Nimoy in his honor.
