About

Leonard Graves (1927–2000) was an American actor, singer, and narrator whose career spanned radio, Broadway, film, and television. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, he began his performing life in radio before transitioning to the stage and screen.

Graves appeared on Broadway between 1951 and 1954, with his principal credit being The King and I. In that production he played the Interpreter and served as understudy to Yul Brynner in the role of the King, stepping into the lead on many occasions. When Brynner departed the show, Graves assumed the lead role for a two-year run on Broadway before joining a national tour of the production.

Outside the theater, Graves became widely recognized as the sole narrator of Victory at Sea, a 26-part television documentary series that aired in 1952. The series earned several major honors, among them a 1954 Emmy Award for Best Public Affairs Program, a special Peabody Award, and the Freedoms Foundation's George Washington Medal.

His film work included roles in Three Brave Men (1956), The Joker Is Wild (1957) as Tim Coogan, The Brothers Karamazov (1958), The Buccaneer (1958) as Chighizola, Pork Chop Hill (1959) as Lt. Cook, A Private's Affair (1959), Pay or Die (1960), The Story of Ruth (1960), and A Message from the Future (1981), which marked his final screen appearance. He also appeared as a guest performer in television series including Navy Log and The Big Picture.

In 1968, Graves was appointed manager of the Memphis Opera Theater. He later relocated to Israel with his wife, where he remained active with the Israel National Opera. He died circa 2000.
