About
Leona Louise Lewis, born on 3 April 1985 in Islington, England, is a British singer, songwriter, and actress. Her father is of Afro-Guyanese descent, and her mother has Welsh, Irish, and Italian ancestry. She has an older half-brother, Bradley, and a younger brother, Kyle. Recognizing her passion for singing from an early age, her parents enrolled her at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, followed by the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, the Ravenscourt Theatre School, and the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology in Croydon, making financial sacrifices to support her ambitions.
Before achieving widespread recognition, Lewis worked as a receptionist at a solicitor's office and as a waitress at Pizza Hut to fund her own studio recording sessions. At 18, she secured a lead role in a production of The Lion King in Paris but was forced to withdraw after injuring her back in an ice-skating accident. She recorded two demo albums during this period — Twilight, produced in collaboration with Spiral Music, and Best Kept Secret, recorded under license from UEG Entertainment — neither of which secured her a commercial record deal. A track from the latter, "Private Party," gained traction on London's underground urban music scene in 2005.
Lewis entered the third series of the ITV talent competition The X Factor in 2006, auditioning with "Over the Rainbow" before judges Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne, and guest judge Paula Abdul. Placed in the 16–24 category with Cowell as her mentor, she went on to defeat Ray Quinn in the final on 16 December 2006, receiving 60 percent of more than eight million televotes. Her prize was a £1 million recording contract with Cowell's label, Syco Music. Her winner's single, a cover of Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This," was released the following day and broke a world record by reaching 50,000 digital downloads within 30 minutes. The single spent four consecutive weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart and became the 2006 UK Christmas number-one, selling 571,000 copies in its first week.
In February 2007, Lewis signed a five-album contract with Clive Davis's American label, J Records. Her debut studio album, Spirit, was released in November 2007 and entered both the UK Albums Chart and the Irish Albums Chart at number one. It was certified 10× platinum in the UK and became the fourth best-selling album of the 2000s in the country. The album's lead single, "Bleeding Love," spent seven weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart and was Britain's best-selling single of 2007. Spirit is also recognized as the best-selling debut album by a female artist in the 21st century in the UK.
Lewis's second studio album, Echo, was released in 2009 and debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart. In 2011, she released the single "Collide," a collaboration with Swedish DJ Avicii, alongside her debut extended play, Hurt: The EP. Her third studio album, Glassheart, followed in 2012 and drew on dubstep and electronic music influences. A Glassheart Tour took place in mid-2013, during which Lewis began recording material for her first Christmas album. That project, Christmas, with Love, was released later in 2013, with its lead single, "One More Sleep," peaking at number three on the UK Singles Chart. In 2014, Lewis made her film debut in Walking on Sunshine, and her fourth studio album, I Am, was released in 2015.
In 2016, Lewis made her Broadway debut, appearing in the revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats, in which she played the role of Grizabella. The following year, she signed a modelling contract with Wilhelmina Models. In 2018, she collaborated with Calum Scott on the single "You Are the Reason," and in 2019 she took on a recurring role in the American television series The Oath. Lewis joined the Paramount+ competition series Queen of the Universe as a judge in 2021. In 2025, she embarked on her first concert residency, A Starry Night, in Las Vegas.
As of 2021, Lewis's record company reported that she had sold over 35 million records worldwide. She is the first British female solo artist to reach the top five with eight singles, surpassing Olivia Newton-John's record of seven. Her awards include two MOBO Awards, an MTV Europe Music Award, and two World Music Awards. She has also received six BRIT Award nominations and three Grammy Award nominations. Beyond her professional career, Lewis has publicly supported animal rights causes and is vegan.
