About

Leon Gordon, born Leon Gordon Bennett on 12 January 1894 in Brighton, England, was an actor, playwright, screenwriter, and director who built a career spanning the stage and screen on both sides of the Atlantic. He died on 4 January 1960 at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles, California, of a heart ailment, and was survived by two daughters.

Gordon received his education at St. John's College before pursuing a career as an actor, during which he served as a leading man with the Boston Repertory Company. He also directed plays in Australia before emigrating to the United States, where he established himself as both a performer and a writer for the stage. His Broadway career ran from 1918 to 1923 and encompassed work as a performer, composer, and book writer. His Broadway credits include the play An Undesirable Lady, the musical Blue Eyes, the play Garden of Weeds, the play The Piker, and the play White Cargo.

As a playwright, Gordon's stage work extended beyond Broadway. His play White Cargo also became the basis for film adaptations, and he wrote the screenplay for the 1930 film version. That same year he joined MGM, launching a prolific Hollywood career. His screenwriting credits for the studio include Heartbreak (1931), Freaks (1932), Age of Indiscretion (1935), The Last of Mrs. Cheyney (1937), A Yank at Oxford (1938), Broadway Melody of 1940, They Met in Bombay (1941), a second film adaptation of White Cargo (1942), Kim (1950), and The Hour of 13 (1952). He also appeared as an actor in the 1924 film Sandra.
