About
Leopold Fall was born on 2 February 1873 in Olmütz, Austria, and went on to become one of the notable composers of the Silver Age of Vienna operetta. He died on 16 September 1925 in Vienna, where he is buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery. His father, Moritz Fall (1848–1922), was a bandmaster and composer who relocated the family to Berlin, and it was under his father's instruction that Fall received his earliest musical training. Fall subsequently enrolled at the Vienna Conservatory, where he studied under Robert Fuchs and Johann Nepomuk Fuchs, before rejoining his father in Berlin.
In 1895, Fall embarked on a career as an operetta conductor in Hamburg and began composing alongside his conducting work. He worked in Berlin, Hamburg, and Cologne before settling permanently in Vienna in 1906, and from 1904 onward he devoted himself entirely to composition. His two brothers, Siegfried and Richard, were also composers; both were murdered in Nazi concentration camps.
Fall's Broadway credits as composer and book writer include The Girl in the Train, The Dollar Princess, The Doll Girl, Lieber Augustin, and Madame Pompadour. The Dollar Princess and Madame Pompadour achieved successful runs in both London and New York and remained in the repertory in Germany and Austria throughout the twentieth century. Der liebe Augustin, known in London as Princess Caprice, was reported to have received an unprecedented 3,360 performances. Beyond operetta, Fall also wrote incidental music for numerous plays and composed three operas — Paroli oder Frau Denise (1902), Irrlicht (1905), and Der goldene Vogel (1920) — though none of the operas achieved the success of his operetta work. A contemporary of Franz Lehár, Fall produced work recognized for its melodious quality and orchestration.
