About
Lee Carson Millar Sr. (February 20, 1888 – December 24, 1941) was an American performer whose career spanned stage, radio, and animated film. Born in Oakland, California, he worked as a voice actor for Disney animated productions and radio programs while also maintaining a presence in the theater throughout his professional life.
Millar's stage career began in earnest in June 1913, when he was a member of the Alcazar Stock Company in San Francisco. It was there that director Leo Ditrichstein cast him in Such Is Life. His performance earned him the opportunity to travel east when producer David Belasco brought the production to Broadway the following August under the title The Temperamental Journey, with Millar reprising his original role. He continued to appear on Broadway through 1929, accumulating credits that included Appearances, The Egotist, Face Value, Toto, and The Great Lover, among other productions.
Beyond the stage, Millar became associated with Disney's animated output, providing the voice of Pluto in a number of short films. His work in that role included Donald's Dog Laundry (1940), Pantry Pirate (1940), Window Cleaners (1940), Bone Trouble (1940), Beach Picnic (1939), Mr. Mouse Takes a Trip, and Mickey's Parrot, as well as appearances in productions such as The Chain Gang (1930), Mickey's Revue, Society Dog Show, and Farmyard Symphony, among others. Pinto Colvig and Bill Farmer also voiced the character in Disney shorts.
In 1923, Millar married actress Verna Felton. The couple had a son, Lee Millar Jr., who likewise pursued a career as a performer. Millar also wrote a dramatic sketch titled Collecting Evidence.
