Lee MacDougall

Lee MacDougall is a Canadian actor, writer, and theatre director originally from Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He pursued his education at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University before beginning a career that has spanned stage performance, playwriting, screenwriting, and directing. His Broadway appearances span from 2001 to 2017, with credits including Mamma Mia! and Come From Away.

Before establishing himself as a playwright, MacDougall worked primarily as a stage actor, supplementing that work with guest appearances in film and television. His transition into writing came in the early 1990s with his first play, High Life, a comedy-drama drawn from his encounters with a group of drug addicts during a regional theatre production. The play earned the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play, Mid-Sized Theatre Division, in 1996, and was shortlisted as a finalist for the Governor General's Award for English-language drama at the 1997 Governor General's Awards. MacDougall later adapted the work into a screenplay for the 2009 film of the same name, receiving a Genie Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 31st Genie Awards.

His subsequent plays include The Gingko Tree, Resistance, Her Wonders, and an adaptation of W. O. Mitchell's novel Who Has Seen the Wind. He has also published short stories alongside his work in theatre.

As a performer, MacDougall is particularly recognized for his role in the original cast of Come From Away, which brought him back to Broadway. He lives in Stratford, Ontario with his husband, theatre director and choreographer Tim French.
