About

Lawrence D'Orsay (1853–1931), born Dorset William Lawrance in Peterborough, England, was a British stage and film actor whose career spanned five decades across England and the United States. His father, John W. Lawrance, was a solicitor, and D'Orsay received his education at Merchant Taylors' School with the expectation that he would pursue a career in law. Instead, he turned to the stage, making his first theatrical appearance in 1877 and spending the following five years touring the English provinces before establishing himself in London theatres.

In 1884, D'Orsay relocated to New York City, making his American debut at Haverley's Theatre on October 6 of that year. He went on to build a Broadway career that extended from 1900 to 1928, appearing in a range of musicals and plays. His Broadway credits included starring roles in the musical Robinson Crusoe, Jr., the musical Miss Innocence, and the play The Lancers. He also appeared in She Stoops to Conquer, the musical White Eagle, and the play Trelawny of the "Wells," among other productions. On stage, D'Orsay became associated with the type of servile Englishman that later actors such as Arthur Treacher and Sebastian Cabot would also come to portray.

Alongside his theatrical work, D'Orsay pursued a career in silent film beginning in 1912. His screen credits included Ruggles of Red Gap (1918), The Bond Boy (1923), His Children's Children (1923), The Side Show of Life (1924), Miss Bluebeard (1925), and The Sorrows of Satan (1926), which marked his final film appearance. He died in 1931.
