About

Laurie Metcalf, born Laura Elizabeth Metcalf on June 16, 1955, in Carbondale, Illinois, is an American actress whose career spans more than four decades across stage, television, and film. Raised in Edwardsville, Illinois, she attended Illinois State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater in 1976. While studying at ISU, she initially majored in German and then anthropology before committing to theatre. Among her classmates were John Malkovich, Glenne Headly, Joan Allen, Terry Kinney, and Jeff Perry, several of whom went on to co-found Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company alongside Gary Sinise. Metcalf became a charter member of Steppenwolf, launching her professional career there. Her father, James, served as budget director at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville until his sudden death in 1984, and her mother, Libby, worked as a librarian. Her great-aunt was Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Zoë Akins.

Metcalf's early stage work brought her significant recognition. In 1984, she traveled to New York to perform in an Off-Broadway Steppenwolf production of Balm in Gilead at Circle Repertory, playing a character named Darlene. The performance earned her the 1984 Obie Award for Best Actress and a Theatre World Award in 1985 for outstanding debut in a Broadway or Off-Broadway production. Critics singled out a lengthy second-act monologue as a particular highlight of her work in the production.

Her Broadway career began in 1995 with My Thing of Love and has extended through 2026, encompassing productions including Hillary and Clinton, A Doll's House, Death of a Salesman, and Brighton Beach Memoirs. Metcalf received Tony Award nominations for her work in November (2008), The Other Place (2010), Misery (2016), and Hillary and Clinton (2019). She won her first Tony Award in 2017 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for A Doll's House, Part 2, and her second in 2018 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for the revival of Edward Albee's Three Tall Women.

On television, Metcalf made an early appearance as a feature player on Saturday Night Live during the 1980–1981 season, appearing in a Weekend Update segment, though she was not invited to return the following year. Her most prominent television role came in 1988, when she joined the cast of the ABC sitcom Roseanne, playing Jackie Harris, the sister of Roseanne Barr's title character, alongside Barr and John Goodman. Metcalf appeared across all nine seasons of the series, which ran through 1997, and earned four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, winning three consecutive times from 1992 to 1994. She reprised the role in the 2018 revival of Roseanne and continued in its spinoff, The Conners, which ran from 2018 to 2025. From 1999 to 2001, she co-starred with Norm Macdonald on The Norm Show. Additional Emmy nominations came for her guest work on 3rd Rock from the Sun (1999), Monk (2006), Desperate Housewives (2007), The Big Bang Theory (2016), the series Getting On (2013–2015), and Horace and Pete (2016). She also appeared in Frasier and The Dropout (2022), and won a fourth Emmy Award for a guest role in Hacks (2022).

Metcalf's film career began with an uncredited role as a maid in Robert Altman's A Wedding (1978). During the 1980s she appeared in supporting roles in films including Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) and Uncle Buck (1989). Her most substantial film role of the 1990s was as Susie Cox, one of Jim Garrison's chief investigators, in Oliver Stone's JFK (1991). She also appeared in Scream 2 (1997) and Georgia Rule (2007), among other features. Beginning in 1995, she provided the voice of Andy's mother across the Toy Story trilogy and voiced Sarah Hawkins in Treasure Planet (2002). Her most acclaimed film performance came in Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird (2017), in which she portrayed the protagonist's mother. The role generated nominations for the Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Critics' Choice Award, each in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Across her career, Metcalf has accumulated two Tony Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Theatre World Award, along with nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and three Golden Globe Awards.
