Laurence Rosenthal is an American composer, arranger, and conductor born on November 4, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan. His work spans theatre, film, television, and the concert hall, establishing him as a versatile figure across multiple entertainment disciplines over the course of his career.
Rosenthal received his formal training at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where his studies focused on piano and composition. He subsequently pursued advanced study in Paris under the instruction of Nadia Boulanger, a formative experience that shaped his compositional foundation.
His film work includes scores for A Raisin in the Sun, The Miracle Worker, Becket, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Clash of the Titans, The Return of a Man Called Horse, and Meetings with Remarkable Men. That body of work earned him two Academy Award nominations and two Golden Globe nominations.
On Broadway, Rosenthal contributed as both a composer and arranger across several productions. His arranging credits include The Music Man and Donnybrook!, while his compositional work for the stage encompasses Sherry!, A Patriot for Me, and Take Me Along, for which he composed the dance music. The book for Sherry! is among his verified Broadway writing credits.
In television, Rosenthal accumulated a substantial record of recognition, winning seven Emmy Awards and receiving six additional nominations in that category. In 2023, the World Soundtrack Academy honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
