About
Laurence Henry Lau, born May 10, 1954, in Long Beach, California, is an American actor whose career spans television, film, and stage. Raised in Lake Oswego, Oregon, he pursued higher education at both Columbia University and Brigham Young University before establishing himself as a working actor across multiple mediums.
Lau first gained widespread recognition through daytime television. An early credit came in 1980 on the television comedy-drama Eight Is Enough, and he subsequently built a substantial soap opera following beginning in 1981 when he joined All My Children as Greg Nelson, a role he held until 1986. The character's relationship with Jenny Gardner, played by Kim Delaney, became a central storyline during his tenure. Lau returned to the role briefly on May 20, 2008, reuniting on screen with characters Jesse and Angie Hubbard and Tad Martin. His other prominent daytime credits include Jamie Frame on NBC's Another World from 1986 to 1990, and attorney Sam Rappaport on ABC's One Life to Live from 2001 to 2003, a role he took over from actor Kale Browne. On August 17, 2008, he joined the recurring cast of As the World Turns as Brian Wheatley. Beyond daytime, Lau made appearances on primetime series including The Love Boat, The Waltons, Frasier, JAG, and Diagnosis: Murder.
Following the conclusion of his run on As the World Turns, Lau filmed a pilot titled Upstate, shot on location in Syracuse, New York, though the project was not picked up for a network season.
Lau's stage work has been extensive. His theater credits include Arrivals, Spine, The Exonerated, The Goat, Becky's New Car, God of Carnage, and Psycho Therapy, among others. In 2007, he played Greeber in Scituate, written by Martin Casella and directed by David Hilder, at TBG Arts Mainstage in New York City. He has also performed in numerous Off-Broadway productions and regional theaters across the United States.
Lau's Broadway credit came in 2009 with August: Osage County, in which he played Steve Heidebrecht in the national tour production starring Estelle Parsons.
