About
Laurence Guittard, born July 16, 1939, in San Francisco, California, is an American actor and singer whose career has been centered primarily on the Broadway stage. His Broadway debut came in 1965 with Baker Street, launching a stage career that would extend through 1993 and encompass some of the most celebrated musicals of the era.
Among Guittard's most significant Broadway credits is his portrayal of Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, a role that earned him both a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical and the 1973 Theatre World Award. He returned to the character of Count Malcolm in 1978 when he appeared in the film adaptation of A Little Night Music alongside Elizabeth Taylor. Then in 1995, Guittard revisited the same production in a different capacity, this time taking on the role of Frederik opposite Judi Dench's Desiree at the Royal National Theatre.
Guittard's association with Sondheim's work extended to the 1973 Shubert Theatre celebration Sondheim: A Musical Tribute, a star-studded event featuring performers including Angela Lansbury, Alexis Smith, Dorothy Collins, Chita Rivera, Glynis Johns, Hermione Gingold, Anthony Perkins, and Larry Kert, among others. Guittard performed "We're Gonna Be All Right" at the event, and his contribution was captured on the live recording released that same year.
His Broadway work also includes the role of Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha, Curly in the 1979 revival of Oklahoma!, and appearances in the Broadway revival of She Loves Me and the musical revue Rodgers and Hart. Beyond Broadway, Guittard co-starred with Donna McKechnie, Dee Hoty, and Tony Roberts in the 1998 revival of the Sondheim-Goldman musical Follies at the Paper Mill Playhouse. He has also performed extensively at the Ahmanson Theatre and the Old Globe in San Diego, and received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for his ensemble work in Cloud 9.
Guittard's screen credits include the 1973 television film The Man Without a Country, the television series Three's Company, Covenant, and the 1978 comedy-mystery film Somebody Killed Her Husband. Off the stage and screen, Guittard is a member of the Guittard family, the prominent San Francisco chocolatiers.
