About

Laura Michelle Kelly is an English actress and singer born on 4 March 1981 in Totton, near Southampton, Hampshire. Her family later relocated to a farm on the Isle of Wight. She is the third of four children and the only daughter. Kelly's earliest stage experience came through a middle school production of Bugsy Malone, after which she studied with local singing teacher Barbara Walter, who cast her in amateur productions at local theatres including Shanklin Stagecoach of Performing Arts School.

Before establishing herself on Broadway, Kelly built an extensive career in London's West End. Her credits there include Beauty and the Beast, Whistle Down the Wind as Swallow in 2000, Les Misérables as Éponine at the Palace Theatre in 2001, Mamma Mia! as Sophie at the Prince Edward Theatre in 2002, and My Fair Lady as Eliza Doolittle in the National Theatre's transfer production at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 2003. She originated the role of Mary Poppins when the musical premiered at the Bristol Hippodrome in September 2004, followed by its West End opening at the Prince Edward Theatre in December of that year. For that performance, Kelly received the 2005 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She gave her final performance in the West End production on 29 October 2005, after more than 400 performances, and was succeeded by Scarlett Strallen.

Kelly made her Broadway debut in 2004 as Hodel in the revival of Fiddler on the Roof. She subsequently returned to Broadway as Mary Poppins, beginning 12 October 2009 at the New Amsterdam Theatre, replacing Scarlett Strallen in the title role. During the run she temporarily left the cast on 6 March 2011, replaced by Ashley Brown, before returning on 19 July 2011. Her final performance in the Broadway production was on 9 October 2011, after which Steffanie Leigh took over the role. On 6 June 2010, Kelly and former London co-star Gavin Lee performed as Mary Poppins and Bert at Ford's Theatre for the America Celebrates 4 July special in front of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama; the event aired on ABC on 2 July 2010.

Outside of her Broadway engagements, Kelly took on notable roles at other prominent American venues. She starred as Anna Leonowens in The King and I at the Muny from 6 to 12 August 2012, and as Ensign Nellie Forbush in the Muny's South Pacific from 8 to 14 July 2013. On 5 May 2013, she reprised the role of Eliza Doolittle in a concert version of My Fair Lady at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Kelly originated the role of Sylvia Llewelyn Davies in the world premiere of Finding Neverland at the American Repertory Theater, where it ran from July through September 2014. She reprised the role when the production transferred to Broadway, opening on 15 April 2015 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, and remained with the show until it closed on 21 August 2016. That same month she appeared as the Mother in the Ellis Island concert of Ragtime. In November 2016, Kelly began a North American tour of The King and I, again playing Anna Leonowens, a role she held until 17 March 2018. In 2018, she was announced as the lead in the Encores! production of Me and My Girl alongside Christian Borle, a former Mary Poppins co-star, and also played Julie of the Cavendish family in The Royal Family of Broadway at Barrington Stage Company in Massachusetts from June to July 2018.

Kelly's work extended beyond musical theatre into other performance areas. During 2007 and 2008, she played Galadriel in the original London production of The Lord of the Rings – The Musical at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, with previews beginning 9 May 2007, an official opening on 19 June 2007, and her final performance on 2 February 2008. She appeared alongside Kevin Spacey and Jeff Goldblum in David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow at London's Old Vic from 1 February to 26 April 2008, and at the Ruhrfestspiele in Recklinghausen, Germany, in May 2008. She played a dual role in an ITV1 production of Agatha Christie's Nemesis, and voiced the character Dorothy in Focus on the Family Radio Theatre's production of The Screwtape Letters, in which Andy Serkis played Screwtape and Bertie Carvel played Wormwood. On 27 August 2007, Kelly made her BBC Proms debut performing "The Prayer" alongside Michael Ball.

On screen, Kelly made her feature film debut in 2007 as Lucy Barker in Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, produced by DreamWorks. Her first starring film role came in the 2013 feature Goddess, in which she played a mother of young twins living in an isolated farmhouse in Tasmania whose songs go viral online without the knowledge of her absent husband, played by Ronan Keating.

As a recording artist, Kelly released her debut single "There Was A Time" through EMI's Angel label on 17 April 2006, which received Record of the Week status on BBC Radio 2. Her debut solo album, The Storm Inside, followed on 1 May 2006, comprising six original songs and six covers, including three songs she wrote herself and a cover of Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know." A second single, "What's It All For?" written by Judie Tzuke, was released digitally on 5 March 2007, followed by an album of the same title combining new tracks with selections from The Storm Inside.

In her personal life, Kelly married choreographer Nick Winston in 2001; they divorced after seven years. On 24 January 2019, she married Sean Helleren in Maui, Hawaii. The couple had a son in 2019, a daughter in 2021, and a second daughter in 2022. Kelly has spoken publicly about her Christian faith, describing it as an important part of her life and noting that she prays before every performance.
