About
Laura Esterman is an American actress born in New York, New York, whose stage, radio, television, and film career spans more than five decades. She trained at HB Studio and made her Broadway debut in the 1969 revival of The Time of Your Life, going on to appear in numerous productions through 1992.
Her Broadway credits include The Waltz of the Toreadors, God's Favorite, Teibele and Her Demon, The Suicide, Metamorphosis, and The Show-Off. Her final Broadway appearance came in 1992, the same year she earned both a Drama Desk Award and an Obie Award for her performance in the original stage production of Scott McPherson's Marvin's Room.
Esterman has maintained a long association with the ZBS Foundation, a producer of radio drama. In 1972 she played the Madonna Vampyra in The Fourth Tower of Inverness, the first installment of the Jack Flanders series. A decade later, in 1982, she took on the title role in the first Ruby the Galactic Gumshoe serial, a character she has reprised many times since, often under the stage name Blanche Blackwell. Her most recent appearance in the role came in Ruby 15: Creatures of the Light in 2025. She also returned to the ZBS universe as the Madonna Vampyra in the 2000 production Return to Inverness.
Her television work includes appearances on Remington Steele, St. Elsewhere, The Facts of Life, L.A. Law, Family Ties, Law & Order, Third Watch, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, among others. Her film credits include Alone in the Dark, Ironweed, Awakenings, The Doors, Addams Family Values, The Confession, and Arranged.
