Laura Dean, born Laura Francine Deutscher on May 27, 1963, in Smithtown, New York, is an American actress whose career spans film, television, stage, and voice work.
Dean began performing at a young age, appearing with the New York City Opera starting at age ten. Over the course of five years, she performed in productions of La bohème, Die tote Stadt, and Mefistofele. Her early stage experience laid the groundwork for a career that would extend across multiple performance disciplines.
She is perhaps most widely recognized for her film role as Lisa, a ballet dancer expelled from the dance department, in Fame. On Broadway, Dean appeared in Doonesbury, for which she received a Theatre World Award in 1984, and later in The Who's Tommy, in which she played the mother of the title character. Her Broadway career spanned from 1983 to 1993.
Dean's television work includes a recurring presence on Friends, where she portrayed Sophie, a coworker of Rachel's at Bloomingdale's, appearing in the third and fourth seasons of the series. Her voice acting credits include the character Tamara in Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders, as well as a role in Christmas in Cartoontown.
