About

Laura Bowman (October 3, 1881 – March 29, 1957) was an American actress whose work spanned stage, radio, and film. Born in Quincy, Illinois, she grew up in Cincinnati before embarking on a career that would take her across multiple decades and performance mediums.

Bowman's early professional life included work in London, where she performed in In Dahomey alongside her common-law husband, Pete Hampton, in the early 1900s. Back in the United States, she became affiliated with the Lafayette Players, a Harlem-based acting troupe, joining the company in 1916 and maintaining an association with the group on and off over the course of several years.

Her Broadway career extended from 1923 to 1947 and encompassed a range of productions. Among her stage credits were The Chip Woman's Fortune, The Ham Tree, and Yesterday's Orchids. She also appeared in Anna Lucasta and Jeb, both of which were part of her later Broadway work.
