About
Larry Pine is an American actor born on March 3, 1945, in Tucson, Arizona. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Texas before completing a Master of Fine Arts degree at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1968. That same year, he married composer and sound designer Margaret Pine, née Rachlin; the couple have one son, Jacob, born in 1972.
Pine launched his professional career Off-Broadway before making his Broadway debut in 1968, playing Fop in a production of Cyrano de Bergerac at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. Also in 1968, he became a founding member of the avant-garde theater company the Manhattan Project, participating in its production of Alice in Wonderland under the direction of Andre Gregory. His stage work continued across several decades, with Broadway credits spanning from 1968 to 2014 that include Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, Angels in America: Perestroika, Bus Stop, A Royal Family, and Casa Valentina.
Pine's screen career has encompassed both film and television. His film work includes Louis Malle's Vanya on 42nd Street (1994), for which he received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male, Tim Robbins's Dead Man Walking (1995), Before and After (1996), Maid in Manhattan (2002), and Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda (2004). He appeared in multiple films directed by Wes Anderson, including The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), and The French Dispatch (2021). In both The Royal Tenenbaums and The Door in the Floor, Pine portrayed a Charlie Rose-type interviewer conducting a one-on-one interview in a dark studio setting. He also appeared in Woody Allen's Celebrity and Small Time Crooks, as well as in The Ice Storm, in which he played a fictional character named Dave Gorman — a role noted in the book Are You Dave Gorman? as the first such portrayal the author encountered.
On television, Pine held recurring roles on the daytime dramas As the World Turns, One Life to Live, and All My Children, where he portrayed Barry Shire from 1997 to 1999. He also appeared in the primetime series Hostages, House of Cards, and Succession.
