About

Larry Keigwin is an American choreographer, performer, and the artistic director of KEIGWIN + COMPANY. He appeared on Broadway in 2002 in Dance of the Vampires.

Keigwin grew up in Wading River on Long Island, one of four brothers, including a twin. While his brothers gravitated toward sports, he pursued gymnastics, trained in a circus program, and took part in school musicals. Before entering higher education, he appeared in multiple episodes of Club MTV. He went on to study dance at Hofstra University, graduating in 1994.

Following graduation, Keigwin performed with a wide range of artists, among them Penny Arcade, Robin Becker, David Roussève, Varla Jean Merman, Zvi Gotheiner, John Jasperse, Jane Comfort, Julie Taymor, Doug Elkins, Doug Varone, and Mark Dendy. It was Dendy who invited him to choreograph and perform a solo work — which developed into "Mattress Suite" — as part of Dendy's program at the Joyce Theater, an opportunity that established Keigwin's path as a contemporary dance choreographer. In 1999, he received a Bessie Award for his performance in Dendy's Dream Analysis.

Keigwin founded KEIGWIN + COMPANY, which gave its premiere performance at Joyce Soho. The company has since performed at venues including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, New York City Center, the Joyce Theater, the American Dance Festival, Bates Dance Festival, and Summerdance Santa Barbara. Among the works Keigwin created for the company are the large-scale piece Bolero, Runaway (2008), the site-specific Sidewalk (2009), and Bird Watching (2010).

His choreographic commissions include works for the Juilliard School, the New York City Ballet's Choreographic Institute, the Martha Graham Dance Company, and Works & Process at the Guggenheim. He served as associate choreographer for The Radio City Rockettes and for the Off-Broadway musical The Wild Party, and he choreographed both the musical Tales of the City and an Off-Broadway production of RENT. He also staged the opening event of the 2010 Fashion Week and collaborated with the pop band Fischerspooner. In 2010, he became the Vail International Dance Festival's first artist in residence. Additionally, Keigwin created Keigwin Kabaret, a fusion of modern dance, vaudeville, and burlesque presented at Joe's Pub by the Public Theater and at Symphony Space.

Keigwin is a co-founder of the Green Box Arts Festival in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado, a multidisciplinary festival aimed at expanding cultural access in the region and providing creative residencies to emerging choreographers.

Among his recognitions, Dance Magazine named him one of its "25 to Watch" in 2004. He received the American Dance Festival's Doris Duke Award for New Work in 2004, 2006, and 2008. In 2011, he was named one of the recipients of the Society of Directors and Choreographers' Joe A. Callaway Award, which honors excellence in directing and choreography during the New York City theatre season.
