About

Larry Dann is a British actor born on 4 May 1941 in London, England, whose career has spanned film, television, and stage across more than seven decades. His entry into acting came about by chance, when someone knocked at his family's door seeking children to work in films. That early opportunity led to his screen debut at the age of five in Adam and Evelyne (1946), alongside Jean Simmons and Stewart Granger. He subsequently worked as an extra before receiving formal training at the Corona Stage Academy.

As a young performer, Dann appeared in two films with Sir Norman Wisdom, Trouble in Store (1953) and The Bulldog Breed (1960), and had a cameo as a schoolboy in Carry On Teacher (1959). His film work continued through the 1960s with roles in What a Crazy World (1963), All Neat in Black Stockings (1968), The Body Stealers (1969), and Before Winter Comes (1969). He returned to the Carry On franchise as an adult, appearing in Carry On Behind (1975), Carry On England (1976), and Carry On Emmannuelle (1978). Additional film credits include Our Miss Fred (1972), Ghost Story (1974), and The Bunker (1981).

Dann joined the Theatre Workshop in 1962 and worked under the direction of Joan Littlewood on a number of productions. Among these was Oh, What a Lovely War!, which he performed in London, Paris, and New York. The New York engagement brought him to Broadway in 1964, marking his sole credited Broadway appearance.

On television, Dann became widely recognized for his role as Sergeant Alec Peters in the ITV police drama The Bill, a part he held from 1984 to 1992 across 227 episodes. He later contributed his recollections of that period to two published volumes: Witness Statements: Making The Bill (Series 1-3), released in 2020, and a follow-up, Witness Statements: Making The Bill (1988), published in 2022, both of which drew on his experiences during the programme's earliest half-hour episodes.

In 2023, Dann published his autobiography, Oh, What A Lovely Memoir, through Devonfire Books.
