About
Larisa Romanovna Oleynik was born on June 7, 1981, in Santa Clara, California, to Lorraine and Roy Oleynik. Her father was of Ukrainian ancestry, and she was raised in the Eastern Orthodox tradition in Los Gatos, a suburb of San Francisco. She graduated from the Pinewood School in Los Altos, California, in 1999, and later enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York.
Oleynik's performing career began at age eight, when she responded to an audition advertisement in a newspaper and was cast in a San Francisco production of Les Misérables in 1989. She secured two roles in that production — young Cosette, a singing part, and young Eponine. Her work in the show led to a referral to a talent agent through her co-star Rider Strong, and she subsequently began formal acting training. She went on to perform in a national touring production of Les Misérables from 1989 to 1991, again playing young Cosette. The database credits her with a Broadway appearance in Les Misérables in 1988, reflecting her association with that production.
Her onscreen career began in 1993 with a guest appearance on the television series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, followed that same year by the television film River of Rage: The Taking of Maggie Keene. Also in 1993, she was cast in the lead role of The Secret World of Alex Mack, a Nickelodeon series in which she played a teenage girl who acquires superpowers after a chemical accident. She won the role over approximately 400 other candidates. The series aired from 1994 to 1998 and ranked among Nickelodeon's three most-watched programs during its run. While working on that series, Oleynik also appeared in the 1995 feature film The Baby-Sitters Club, playing Dawn Schafer alongside Rachael Leigh Cook and Schuyler Fisk, and had a recurring role on Boy Meets World as Dana Pruitt, the girlfriend of Rider Strong's character Shawn Hunter. In 1996, she made a cameo appearance on The Adventures of Pete and Pete.
Oleynik starred in the teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, released in April 1999, in which she played Bianca. The film grossed $38 million domestically. From 1998 to 2000, she appeared in twenty-one episodes of the NBC series 3rd Rock from the Sun as Alissa Strudwick. In 2000, she appeared in two independent films, 100 Girls and A Time for Dancing, neither of which received a theatrical release in the United States.
In 2001, Oleynik had a supporting role in An American Rhapsody, a period film opposite Nastassja Kinski and Scarlett Johansson, which follows a young woman whose parents flee Communist Hungary without her. She followed that with a supporting part in Bringing Rain (2003), a low-budget drama starring Adrian Grenier and Paz de la Huerta that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Later credits include a guest role on Malcolm in the Middle in 2005, a supporting role in the short-lived WB series Pepper Dennis in 2006, and the independent drama Pope Dreams that same year.
In March 2011, Oleynik began a recurring role on Hawaii Five-0 as CIA analyst Jenna Kaye, a character who was later killed off. She was subsequently cast in Atlas Shrugged: Part II as Cherryl Brooks, a store clerk who becomes acquainted with the protagonist Dagny Taggart, portrayed by Samantha Mathis. From 2010 to 2015, she had a recurring role as Cynthia Cosgrove on the AMC drama Mad Men. Between 2011 and 2014, she provided a voice role as Icy on the Nickelodeon revival of Winx Club. In 2014, she appeared in the horror film Jessabelle.
Oleynik's stage work continued beyond her early musical theater career. In 2016, she starred in the one-woman show I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, New York. Beginning in 2017, she performed in the Off-Broadway musical comedy Baghdaddy. In 2020, she starred in the Netflix family comedy series The Healing Powers of Dude, and in 2023 she was cast as Sylvia in the Nickelodeon comedy Erin and Aaron. Oleynik is set to appear in POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women at the Santa Fe Playhouse in 2026.
In her personal life, Oleynik resides in Venice, California. In January 2013, she was granted a restraining order against a stalker who had changed his last name to Oleynik.
