About

Lance Mulcahy (17 April 1931 – 26 January 1995) was an Australian-born composer who worked in musical theatre and revue across Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He was originally from Sydney, Australia.

Mulcahy began his career during the 1950s composing for intimate revue, with early work associated with the Phillip Street Theatre in Sydney. He subsequently moved into the West End, where he contributed to three revues: Pieces of Eight in 1959, followed by On The Brighter Side and One Over The Eight, both in 1961. During this period he also co-wrote the song "One Day" with Emrys Bryson, a track that was recorded by Matt Monro.

His Broadway career began with the chamber musical Park, which featured book and lyrics by Paul Cherry and opened at the John Golden Theatre in April 1970. A decade later, Mulcahy brought a second work to Broadway: Shakespeare's Cabaret, a revue he conceived and composed using the words of Shakespeare. The production first played off-Broadway at the Colonnades Theatre before transferring to the Bijou Theatre in early 1981. The score earned Mulcahy a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score in 1981.

His partner was British theatre designer Desmond Heeley, who died in June 2016.
