About

Legare Rogers Lytton, born Oscar Legare Rogers on April 9, 1867, in New Orleans, Louisiana, was an American stage and silent film actor who also practiced architecture earlier in his career. He died on August 14, 1924, at Bellevue Hospital in New York City.

Lytton earned a degree from Columbia University in 1889 and subsequently spent several years working under the prominent architect Stanford White. He later relocated to Dobbs Ferry, New York, where he served as the head of a boys' school before ultimately pursuing a career as an actor.

His Broadway career spanned from 1903 to 1918 and encompassed a range of productions. Among his stage credits were The Proud Prince (1903), Love's Pilgrimage (1904), The Sorceress (1904), The Galloper (1906), Lincoln (1909), Madame X (1910), The Clouds (1911), The Strugglers (1911), and Fast Service (1918).

After establishing himself on the stage, Lytton transitioned to motion pictures, appearing in more than 90 films between 1912 and 1924 during the silent era. He performed for Vitagraph Studios as part of that work in film.

Lytton's papers are preserved in the collection of the New York Public Library.
