About
Kyle Scatliffe is an American stage actor born on July 18, 1986, who grew up in Westwood, New Jersey, as the youngest of five children. He attended Westwood Regional High School, where he performed with the school's drama group, the Woodington Players, appearing in productions of To Kill a Mockingbird, City of Angels, and Guys and Dolls. His interest in theatre began only after a drama teacher recognized his natural talent and encouraged him to pursue performing. Following high school, Scatliffe enrolled at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey, before completing two years of study at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.
On the recommendation of an AMDA professor, Scatliffe secured his first professional engagement in Disney's Aida at the Coastal Carolina Arts Center. Regional productions of Oklahoma! and Ragtime followed, along with performing in various roles aboard Disney Cruise Lines. In 2012, producer Robert Christianson cast Scatliffe in A Christmas Carol: The Concert, an original adaptation featuring music by Christianson and lyrics by Alisa Klein Hauser, in which he played Marley's Ghost, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, and additional roles. He reprised those parts in HMS Media's 2013 national PBS special of the production, executive produced by Christianson and featuring E. Faye Butler, Michael Aaron Lindner, Scott Coulter, and Arya Daire.
In 2013, Scatliffe was cast in the leading role of Haywood Patterson in the West End production of The Scottsboro Boys, earning a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. Producer Cameron Mackintosh attended a performance and subsequently invited Scatliffe to audition for the role of Enjolras in the upcoming Broadway revival of Les Misérables, an audition that took place on the stage of the Queen's Theatre, the London home of the West End production. Scatliffe joined the Broadway revival when it opened in March 2014 and remained with the production into early 2015.
His Broadway career continued with the 2015 revival of The Color Purple at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, where he played Harpo. Scatliffe stayed with that production through its closing on January 8, 2017. His Broadway credits from 2014 to 2018 also include Hamilton and To Kill a Mockingbird. In February 2018, he began performing the dual role of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the second U.S. tour of Hamilton.
