About
Ruth Kyle MacDonnell, born May 13, 1922, in Austin, Texas, was an American model, singer, actress, and television personality whose career spanned the 1940s and 1950s. Raised in Larned, Kansas, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George B. MacDonnell. She completed her secondary education at Larned High School before attending Kansas State College and pursuing post-graduate study at Ward-Belmont College, where she participated in the Glee Club.
MacDonnell's public profile began to rise in September 1945, when she was selected as Miss Nashville Air Transport Command, earning the title of the group's official sweetheart and pin-up girl. The competition, held at War Memorial Auditorium, drew a capacity crowd that left thousands unable to enter, and MacDonnell was chosen from a field of 26 other contestants. Her photograph was subsequently distributed to ATC stations worldwide. The victory brought her to the attention of Harry Conover, who had presided over the Miss ATC contest and later encountered her at the Army-Notre Dame football game that fall, at which point he offered her a position with his modeling agency. By May 1946, she had appeared in a full-page cover photograph in Parade magazine, which identified her as one of the top-ranking photographers' models of the period.
Her Broadway career ran from 1946 to 1949 and included three productions: the play Park Avenue, the revue Make Mine Manhattan in 1948, and Touch and Go in 1949. Beyond Broadway, she performed in nightclub engagements at venues including the Persian Room at the Hotel Plaza in New York City and the Carousel in Pittsburgh. In 1953, she appeared in the national touring company of Twin Beds.
Television became a defining medium for MacDonnell during the late 1940s. She was named Miss Television 1948, and on May 31, 1948, Life magazine featured her on its front page, describing her on-air presence as a combination of professional stage presence and conversational intimacy. That same year she hosted For Your Pleasure, a 15-minute weekly variety program on NBC. In September 1948, she and the Norman Paris Trio transitioned from that program to the new half-hour series Girl About Town, which ran until June 1949. She also served as a host of Hold That Camera and as a panelist on Celebrity Time. Warner Bros. signed her to a film contract in 1947, and she appeared in the film Taxi in 1953.
MacDonnell expanded into radio in January 1952, when WOR in New York began broadcasting The Kyle MacDonnell Show, a 15-minute disc jockey program airing Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. She married four times: Norris J. McGaw in 1942 in Larned, Kansas; Charles K. Laitus in 1948, from whom she was soon divorced; Richard H. Gordon, a theater writer and producer, on July 19, 1950, with that marriage ending in October 1954; and William H. Vernon, a banker, in 1959. Her marriage to Vernon coincided with her retirement from show business. Vernon died in 1995. MacDonnell died on September 28, 2004, at her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the age of 82. Her papers are preserved at the Kansas Historical Society.
