About

Kyle Dean Massey is an American actor and singer born on November 17, 1981, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, where his father worked as a Certified Public Accountant and his mother as a teacher. He attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School for his elementary education and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from Southwest Missouri State University, now known as Missouri State University, in 2004. His Broadway career spans from 2003 to 2021 and includes productions such as Wicked, Company, Next to Normal, Xanadu, and The Yellow Brick Road Not Taken.

Massey's professional stage work began Off-Broadway, where he played Matthew in Altar Boyz from October 2006 through June 2007. He entered the world of Wicked in 2007 by joining the North American touring production as an ensemble member and understudy for the lead role of Fiyero. He subsequently moved to Broadway, where he took on the role of Thalia in Xanadu from April 2008 until the production closed in September of that year.

His association with Next to Normal began in June 2009, when he stepped into the role of Gabe on Broadway, initially on a temporary basis before transitioning to a cover position and then assuming the role permanently in January 2010. He remained with the production until it closed in January 2011. Massey then returned to Broadway's Wicked, this time as Fiyero in the lead capacity, before departing in March 2011 to star in Lucky Guy, which opened Off-Broadway in April 2011. Following that show's closure, he briefly returned to Wicked on Broadway as Fiyero, covering for Richard H. Blake during a three-week absence Blake took to be with his newborn child.

Massey continued his relationship with Wicked across multiple engagements. He played Fiyero in the touring production from November 2011 through February 2012, rejoined the Broadway company in the same role from July 31, 2012, through May 26, 2013, and returned once more to the Broadway production from December 2013 through February 2014. Outside of Wicked, he appeared in Broadway Bares in 2012 alongside Miriam Shor, and in August 2013 he played Tony in The Muny's production of West Side Story. On April 1 of the following year, he assumed the title role in the Broadway revival of Pippin, completing his run on October 29.

Beyond the stage, Massey became known to television audiences through the ABC and CMT musical drama series Nashville, in which he played Kevin Bicks, a recurring character written as an openly gay country music songwriter. His casting in the role was reported on January 23, 2015, and he appeared on the series through 2018.

In his personal life, Massey is gay and has been a supporter of the It Gets Better Project. He married actor Taylor Frey on October 1, 2016. On April 22, 2021, Massey and Frey announced they were expecting their first child via surrogacy, and on October 31, 2021, the couple welcomed their daughter, Rafa Massey-Frey.
