About

Kyle Martin Chandler was born on September 17, 1965, in Buffalo, New York, the fourth of the children of Edward Chandler, a pharmaceutical sales representative, and Sally Jeanette Chandler (née Meyer), a dog breeder. Chandler grew up in suburban Lake Forest, Illinois, until age 11, when his family relocated to a small farm in Loganville, Georgia. His mother bred and showed Great Danes under the kennel name Sheenwater Kennels, and Chandler traveled with his parents to dog shows and worked at the boarding facility as a child. His father died of a heart attack in 1980, after which his mother ran the kennel business to support the family. Chandler was raised Catholic but stopped attending church following his father's death.

Chandler attended George Walton Academy in Monroe, Georgia, graduating in 1983. As a freshman at Walton, he was part of the school's 1979 state championship football team, but left the sport the following year, at age 14, after his father's death. He subsequently became involved in the school's theatre program. He went on to study drama at the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. In 1988, seven credits short of completing his degree, he left college to pursue a television deal with ABC, which had signed him as part of a new talent program.

Chandler made his screen debut that same year in the television film Quiet Victory: The Charlie Wedemeyer Story, and also studied with acting teacher Milton Katselas in 1988. His first recurring television work came in a supporting role as Army Private William Griner in eight episodes of Tour of Duty. He made his feature film debut in the 1992 George Strait vehicle Pure Country. From 1991 to 1993, Chandler appeared in all 42 episodes of the ABC drama Homefront, playing Cleveland Indians right fielder Jeff Metcalf in a series set in a fictional post-World War II Ohio town.

In 1994, Chandler made his Broadway debut in a revival of William Inge's Picnic at the Roundabout Theatre Company, co-starring with Ashley Judd. From 1996 to 2000, he starred as Gary Hobson, a stockbroker-turned-hero who receives the following day's newspaper delivered by a mysterious cat, in the CBS series Early Edition. He appeared in all 90 episodes across the show's four seasons and received the Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television in 1996 for the role. In 2001, he appeared opposite Joan Cusack in one season of the ABC comedy series What About Joan, playing investment banker Jake Evans. In 2003, he played lawyer Grant Rashton in all six episodes of the short-lived NBC series The Lyon's Den, opposite Rob Lowe.

Chandler's film work expanded in 2005 when he played 1930s film star Bruce Baxter in Peter Jackson's King Kong, a character based on actor Bruce Cabot from the original film. In February 2006, he guest-starred in two episodes of the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy as bomb squad leader Dylan Young, earning his first Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series at the 58th Primetime Emmy Awards. He returned to the series for two additional episodes in February 2007.

While working on Grey's Anatomy, Chandler met director Peter Berg, who was developing the NBC drama series Friday Night Lights. Chandler was cast as high school football coach Eric Taylor, a role he learned about during Christmas vacation in 2005. The series, inspired by Buzz Bissinger's book and the film of the same name, followed a coach, his family, and players in a small Texas town. The show premiered in 2006 and, beginning with its third season in 2008, aired first on DirecTV's The 101 Network before repeating on NBC. The series concluded in 2011, and Chandler won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in its final season. During production of Friday Night Lights, he also appeared in Berg's 2007 film The Kingdom and in The Day the Earth Stood Still in 2008, playing John Driscoll.

Following Friday Night Lights, Chandler concentrated on film work. In 2011, he had a lead role in J.J. Abrams' Super 8. In 2012, he appeared in both Argo and Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, in which he played Islamabad CIA Station Chief Joseph Bradley alongside Jessica Chastain and Jason Clarke. In 2013, he appeared in Broken City and played FBI agent Patrick Denham in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill that received five Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. That same year he appeared in The Spectacular Now. Subsequent film credits include Todd Haynes' Carol (2015), Manchester by the Sea (2016), Game Night and First Man (both 2018), and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021).

From 2015 to 2017, Chandler starred in the Netflix thriller series Bloodline, for which he received additional Primetime Emmy Award nominations. He is set to portray Hal Jordan in the DC Universe, beginning with the HBO series Lanterns.
