About

Krystal Joy Brown is an American actress whose career spans Broadway, television, and voice acting. She made her professional stage debut in the national tour of Rent in 2007, where she was cast as Mimi. Regional theater work followed, including productions of Little Shop of Horrors and High School Musical in 2008 and Calvin Berger in 2010, as well as an appearance in the Off-Broadway production Falling for Eve in 2010.

Brown entered Broadway in 2009 as a replacement performer in the musical revival of Hair, taking on various roles in the production. She originated the role of Ornella Sturdevant in Leap of Faith in 2012, a stage adaptation of the 1992 film. The following year she originated the role of Josephine Bloom in Big Fish, based on the 2004 film of the same name. On January 24, 2014, she joined the cast of Motown: The Musical, taking over the role of Diana Ross from Valisia LeKae in the jukebox production.

On December 10, 2019, Brown joined the Broadway cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton, portraying Eliza Hamilton in a replacement role. Kyle Smith of National Review wrote of her performance, "The Schuyler sisters provide the most beautiful voices in the production, with Krystal Joy Brown offering a poignant Eliza." In 2022, she played Gussie Carnegie in the off-Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along at the New York Theatre Workshop, opposite Jonathan Groff as Frank Shepard. The role earned her a Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Brown described the significance of the casting, saying, "This opportunity to represent and be the first Black Gussie is huge and it feels powerful," and drew on Eartha Kitt, Diahann Carroll, Dorothy Dandridge, and Diana Ross as inspirations for the character. Jesse Green of The New York Times described her as giving a "fetching performance, charming if not credible." She reprised the role when the production transferred to Broadway in 2023.

Brown's television work began with a guest appearance on the series Castle in 2011, playing a character named Sasha in the episode "Pretty Dead." She subsequently appeared in guest roles on the Hulu series Deadbeat and NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, both in 2016. She took a recurring role on CBS's The Equalizer in 2021 and recurred in season two of the Starz series Power Book III: Raising Kanan in 2022. In 2019, she guest starred on Sydney to the Max, portraying Dr. Alisha Reynolds in the episode "How the Syd Stole Christmas." Brown starred in the 2023 Hallmark Christmas film Heaven Down Here.

In voice work, Brown portrayed Netossa in the Netflix animated series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power from 2018 to 2020. She voices Barbara Gordon in the Amazon Prime animated series Batman: Caped Crusader, which began in 2024.
