About

Kristin Ann Scott Thomas was born on 24 May 1960 in Redruth, Cornwall, England. Her father, Lieutenant Commander Simon Scott Thomas, served as a pilot in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm 893 Squadron and died in a flying accident involving a de Havilland Sea Vixen when Scott Thomas was five years old. Her mother, Deborah, had studied drama before the marriage and later remarried another Royal Navy pilot, Lieutenant Commander Simon Idiens, who also died in a flying accident, this time in a Phantom FG1 from RNAS Yeovilton off the north coast of Cornwall in January 1972. Scott Thomas grew up in Trent, near Sherborne, Dorset, and was educated at Cheltenham Ladies' College and St Antony's Leweston in Sherborne. She has three siblings, among them actress Serena Scott Thomas. Her family connections extend to Admiral Sir Richard Thomas, a former Black Rod and her uncle; William Scott Thomas, her grandfather, who commanded HMS Impulsive during World War II; and the polar explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, her great-great-uncle.

After leaving school in 1978, Scott Thomas moved to Hampstead, London, where she worked in a department store while beginning a BEd in Speech and Drama at the Central School of Speech and Drama. When her request to switch to an acting degree was refused, she relocated to Paris to work as an au pair and studied acting at the École nationale supérieure des arts et techniques du théâtre. She speaks French fluently. At the age of 25, she was cast as Mary Sharon in Under the Cherry Moon (1986), the film debut that launched her professional career.

Her breakthrough came with the 1988 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's A Handful of Dust, in which she played Brenda Last. The performance earned her the Evening Standard Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer. She subsequently appeared opposite Hugh Grant in Bitter Moon (1992) and Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), the latter bringing her the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. In 1994 she also starred in the Romanian–French film An Unforgettable Summer, playing Marie-Thérèse Von Debretsy, delivering her lines phonetically after having them translated into French. Her role as Katharine Clifton in The English Patient (1996) generated an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress as well as a Golden Globe nomination. Further film work during this period included Mission: Impossible (1996), The Horse Whisperer (1998) with Robert Redford, and Random Hearts with Harrison Ford.

Scott Thomas returned to the stage in 2003 in a French theatre production of Racine's Bérénice, playing the title role. Her screen work continued with an appearance as Lady Sylvia McCordle in Robert Altman's Gosford Park (2001). She took on a significant stage role in a London West End production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, playing Arkadina in a Royal Court revival, for which she won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in 2008. She reprised the role of Arkadina when the production transferred to New York in September 2008, marking her Broadway debut. In January 2013, she starred in Harold Pinter's Old Times, directed by Ian Rickson, and in summer 2014 she returned to the West End to play Emma in Pinter's Betrayal at the Comedy Theatre, also directed by Rickson, alongside Ben Miles and Douglas Henshall. In 2014 she appeared at The Old Vic in the title role of Sophocles's Electra.

Scott Thomas has maintained a parallel career in French-language cinema. She played Hélène in Guillaume Canet's Tell No One (2006) and received widespread recognition for her performance in Philippe Claudel's I've Loved You So Long (2008), winning the European Film Award for Best Actress and earning BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. Her subsequent French-language films include Leaving (2009) and Love Crime (2010). Among her English-language films from the same period are Sarah's Key (2010), in which she played an American journalist in Paris investigating the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup, Nowhere Boy (2010), The Woman in the Fifth (2011), and Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives (2013), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2017, she portrayed Clementine Churchill in Joe Wright's Darkest Hour, earning a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 71st British Academy Film Awards. She appeared in Tomb Raider in 2018 and played Mrs. Danvers in Ben Wheatley's 2020 adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca.

On television, Scott Thomas received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her guest appearance in the second season of the comedy series Fleabag in 2019. She has starred in the Apple TV+ spy series Slow Horses since 2022.

Scott Thomas is a five-time BAFTA Award and Olivier Award nominee. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2003 Birthday Honours and elevated to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2015 New Year Honours, both for services to drama. The French government named her a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 2005.
