About
Knute Erickson, born Knut Timar Carlsson Eriksson on May 27, 1873, in Norrköping, Sweden, was a Swedish-American vaudeville comedian and character actor whose career spanned stage, screen, and vaudeville across several decades. Although some sources have identified him as Carl Erickson, born in 1872 in Ogden, Utah, birth records and passport applications confirm his Swedish origins. He emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1881 and grew up in Salt Lake City, where he worked backstage at a local theatre before relocating to New York City to study dramatics.
Erickson made his first Broadway appearance in 1894, performing alongside Mack Swain and taking on roles as a Swedish character. His Broadway career continued into the following decade, with appearances on the New York stage between 1906 and 1916, including the plays Broadway and Buttermilk and His Majesty's Car. In the early 1900s, he developed two Swedish immigrant characters for the vaudeville stage: "Yon Yonson" and the more successful "Daffy Dan," the latter performed in productions overseen by Jesse Lasky.
In 1915, Erickson appeared in two short silent films in which he performed in character. After 1921, while maintaining his vaudeville work, he established himself in minor character roles in Hollywood films. His screen career began with Gasoline Gus, in which he appeared alongside Roscoe Arbuckle. Over the following fifteen years, Erickson appeared in more than thirty additional films, frequently in small or uncredited parts. Among these were The Monster with Lon Chaney in 1925, The Non-Stop Flight in 1926, and The Bitter Tea of General Yen, directed by Frank Capra in 1933. Erickson died in Los Angeles on December 31, 1945.
