About
Kitty Gordon, born Constance Minnie Blades on 22 April 1878 in Folkestone, Kent, was an English stage and silent film actress who became a prominent figure on the New York stage in the early twentieth century. The daughter of Col. Blades of the Royal Artillery, she made her professional stage debut at the Princes Theatre in Bristol in 1901, appearing in a touring production of San Toy. She went on to perform in The Duchess of Dantzic in 1903, the operetta Véronique in 1904, and The Three Kisses in 1907 before relocating to New York City in 1909. Gordon died on 26 May 1974 in a nursing home in Brentwood, New York.
Her Broadway career spanned from 1905 to 1915 and encompassed productions including La Belle Paree, Bow-Sing, the musical Alma, Where Do You Live?, and the revue A World of Pleasure. Among her most significant stage achievements was her role in composer Victor Herbert's operetta The Enchantress, a part Herbert wrote specifically for her. Gordon starred in the world premiere of the production on 19 October 1911 at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., and continued with it when it transferred to the New York Theatre on Broadway later that same month. She toured in the piece for two years until illness forced her to step away.
Gordon transitioned to silent film in 1916, making her screen debut in As in a Looking Glass. Over the following three years she appeared in twenty-one films. She returned to stage work from 1919 onward and later made television appearances, with her final television credit coming in 1952 on the program Life Begins at Eighty.
Her personal life included several marriages. Her first husband was Maxwell James, with whom she had a daughter, Vera, who later pursued an acting career under the name Vera Beresford. Following James's death, Gordon married theatre manager Michael Levenston on 10 December 1903, though he died on 29 March 1904. In October 1904 she married Captain Henry Horsley-Beresford, known as Harry, born in 1876 and a son of the 3rd Baron Decies, who died in 1924. Her daughter was subsequently known as Cynthia Vera Beresford. In 1932 Gordon married Ralph Ranlet. Her daughter Vera died in 1945.
