About
Albert King Calder was born on April 21, 1898, in Baltimore, Maryland, and went on to build a career spanning theatre, film, and television that lasted until his death in 1964.
Calder made his Broadway debut in 1929 in The Humbug, where he originated the role of Dr. Norman Ware. His stage career extended across more than two decades, with Broadway appearances running from 1921 to 1951 and including productions such as Seventeen, The Best People, Bravo!, The Doughgirls, and Season in the Sun. Among his most sustained theatrical commitments was the 1940 play My Sister Eileen, in which he performed for over 500 performances. He later joined a stage company in Chicago, Illinois, and his final theatre credit came in 1951.
Calder transitioned to screen work in 1949 with an appearance in the anthology television series The Clock. From 1952 to 1954 he held a starring role in the crime drama series Martin Kane, Private Eye. His television work also included guest appearances on a wide range of programs, among them The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Perry Mason, The Untouchables, Rawhide, The Fugitive, The Virginian, Bat Masterson, Tales of Wells Fargo, Trackdown, Man with a Camera, Mr. Lucky, State Trooper, and Wanted Dead or Alive. He appeared in multiple episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents across several seasons, as well as in one episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour in 1963. His film credits include The Rains of Ranchipur, Mardi Gras, Time Table, Wall of Noise, Three Came to Kill, On the Threshold of Space, Everything's Ducky, and Hong Kong Confidential.
Calder died on June 28, 1964, following a heart attack at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 67. He was buried at Ferncliff Cemetery.
