About
Kim Frederick Coates, born February 21, 1958, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, is a Canadian-American actor and producer whose career spans theatre, film, and television across more than three decades. The son of Frederick and Joyce Coates, he first encountered live performance while taking a drama course as an elective at the University of Saskatchewan, an experience that redirected him toward a professional acting career.
Coates built his early theatrical foundation at the Stratford Festival, joining the company during its 1985–86 season. At 28, he became the youngest actor in the festival's history to take the title role in Macbeth. He made his Broadway debut in 1988, playing Stanley Kowalski in the revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. The following year he appeared in Les Liaisons Dangereuses at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. Nearly three decades after that Louisville engagement, Coates returned to the stage in 2018 with the Outside the March production of Jez Butterworth's Jerusalem, portraying Johnny "Rooster" Byron. The performance earned him the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role – Play at the 2018 Dora Awards.
His screen career began with the 1986 Canadian sports biopic The Boy in Blue. He crossed into Hollywood productions with a supporting role in the 1991 Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans action comedy The Last Boy Scout. Over the following decades Coates accumulated credits in more than 100 film and television titles, including Innocent Blood (1992), The Client (1994), Waterworld (1995), Bad Boys (1995), Battlefield Earth (2000), Pearl Harbor (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001), Open Range (2003), Assault on Precinct 13 (2005), The Island (2005), Silent Hill (2006), Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), and Fantasy Island (2020). He also played Ronnie Hortense in the cult hockey comedy Goon (2011) and reprised the role in Goon: Last of the Enforcers (2017).
Television audiences came to know Coates most widely through his portrayal of Alexander "Tig" Trager in the FX crime drama Sons of Anarchy, a role he held from 2008 to 2014. He subsequently starred as gangster Declan Gardiner in the Citytv series Bad Blood (2017–18), a performance that brought him the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role at the 7th Canadian Screen Awards; the series itself received a nomination for Best Dramatic Series. He had previously received two Gemini Award nominations. Additional television credits include Prison Break, CSI: Miami, Ghost Wars, Godless, Van Helsing, and American Primeval, in which he portrayed Brigham Young. In 2024, Coates joined the second season of The Walking Dead: Dead City as Bruegel, the leader of a gang called the Silk Stockings.
Coates has received recognition beyond the entertainment industry. On June 6, 2017, the University of Saskatchewan conferred an honorary doctorate upon him. On March 28, 2023, he was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in Saskatchewan. He became a dual citizen of Canada and the United States in 2010. Coates divides his time between Los Angeles and Toronto, where he lives with his wife, Diana Chappell, and their two daughters, Kyla and Brenna. He supports One Heart Source, a nonprofit organization focused on ending poverty through education and health initiatives, and participates in Rally for Kids events benefiting the Pinball Clemons Foundation.
