About
Kevin Mambo, born June 29, 1972, in Harare, Zimbabwe, is a Zimbabwean-Canadian actor and musician who built his career across stage, film, and television. He was raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, where he sang in a church choir as a child and began studying piano at age eight, followed by saxophone at ten and guitar at nineteen. He attended Aden Bowman Collegiate in Saskatoon and later Brentwood College School in Mill Bay, British Columbia. Mambo went on to study Political Science and African History at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, where he also took courses at the McGill Jazz Conservatory, before transferring to the University of Southern California, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Mambo's Broadway career spans 2009 to 2015 and includes three productions. He originated the title role of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti in the musical Fela! at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, a performance that became one of his most recognized stage credits. He also appeared in The Color Purple and took on the role of Mafala in The Book of Mormon during the production's first national tour from 2012 to 2013.
Beyond Broadway, Mambo accumulated a substantial body of off-Broadway and regional theater work. He appeared in Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Ruined at the Manhattan Theatre Club and at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, as well as in Hoodoo Love at the Cherry Lane Theatre, Once Around the Sun at the Zipper Factory Theater, and Fela Is a Weapon at the Shrine Theater. In 2011 and 2012, he played Chancellor in Danai Gurira's The Convert, directed by Emily Mann. In 2014, Mambo starred as Barret Rude Jr. in The Fortress of Solitude, a musical based on Jonathan Lethem's novel of the same name, which premiered at the Dallas Theater Center before transferring to The Public Theater in New York. The following year, he appeared in the Billie Holiday Theatre production of Jackie Alexander's Brothers from the Bottom alongside Wendell Pierce.
On television, Mambo is widely recognized for portraying Marcus Williams on the CBS daytime serial Guiding Light from 1995 to 1998, a role that earned him two Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series. His additional television credits include One Life to Live, Soul Food, Any Day Now, Spin City, Family Matters, Freshman Dorm, Mistresses, Luke Cage, and Hit & Run, as well as multiple entries in the Law & Order franchise, including Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Law & Order: Trial by Jury. His film work includes Cadillac Records, in which he portrayed Jimmy Rogers, and Nina, in which he appeared alongside Zoe Saldana. He also appeared in Rustin in 2023 as Whitney Young.
