About

Kevin Brian Conway (May 29, 1942 – February 5, 2020) was an American actor and film director born in New York City. His mother, Helen Margaret Conway (née Sanders), worked as a sales representative, and his father, James John Conway, was a mechanic. Conway trained at HB Studio in New York City.

Conway's stage career spanned Broadway and off-Broadway from 1969 to 2002. His off-Broadway work included One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, One for the Road, The Elephant Man, Other People's Money, and When You Comin' Back, Red Ryder?, the last of which earned him the 1974 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance. On Broadway, he appeared in Indians and Moonchildren, as well as revivals of The Plough and the Stars, Of Mice and Men — in which he played George Milton opposite James Earl Jones as Lennie Small — and Dinner at Eight. In 1980, Conway received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Director of a Play for Mecca.

His screen career began with a prominent role in the 1972 film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, in which he portrayed Roland Weary. He went on to play multiple characters in the 1981 horror film The Funhouse, General Curtis LeMay in the 2000 historical drama Thirteen Days, and Frank Papale in the 2006 Disney football film Invincible. Conway portrayed the fictional Sergeant Buster Kilrain in both entries of Ron Maxwell's Civil War duology, Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. Additional film credits include the role of Crum Petree in the 1988 comedy Funny Farm. In 1987, Conway directed the independent film The Sun and the Moon.

On television, Conway served as the Control Voice for the revived series of The Outer Limits from 1995 to 2002. He portrayed Seamus O'Reily, the abusive father of Ryan and Cyril O'Reily, in the HBO prison drama Oz, and appeared as Neal Caffee, the father of the titular brothers, in the Showtime drama Brotherhood. Conway guest starred as Jonas Stern, a founding partner of the law firm at the center of The Good Wife, in the episodes "Threesome," "Boom," and "Wrongful Termination." He appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation as a clone of the Klingon figure Kahless, and played a blind traveling piano tuner in season four of Northern Exposure. On JAG, he recurred as Roscoe Martin, a paraplegic Vietnam veteran, across the episodes "King of the Fleas" and "The Martin Baker Fan Club." He also played Mox Mox in Streets of Laredo, appeared in the second season of In the Heat of the Night, guest starred on three Law & Order series, and played the father of the character Jenny in NBC's The Black Donnellys in 2007.

Conway died of a heart attack in Manhattan on February 5, 2020, at the age of 77.
