About
Kevin Anderson is an American actor, singer, and drummer born on January 13, 1960, in Gurnee, Illinois. One of five children, he trained at the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University in Chicago for three years before beginning a career that has spanned stage, film, and television.
Anderson is a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, whose alumni include John Malkovich, Gary Sinise, and Laurie Metcalf. His early stage work earned him a Theatre World Award and a Joseph Jefferson Award for his performance in Lyle Kessler's play Orphans, a role he reprised in the 1987 film adaptation. In 1989, he originated the dual roles of The Balladeer and Lee Harvey Oswald in the staged reading of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins. That same year marked the beginning of his Broadway career, which continued through 2008.
In 1993, Anderson created the role of Joe Gillis in the original London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard, opposite Patti LuPone, who originated the role of Norma Desmond. LuPone was subsequently not cast in the New York production, a situation Anderson described as a very nasty, public affair in which he found himself caught in the middle. His Broadway credits include the drama Orpheus Descending, a revival of Death of a Salesman for which he won the 1999 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play and received a Tony Award nomination, the musical Brooklyn, and the Manhattan Theatre Club production of Come Back, Little Sheba, in which he played Doc from January 24 to March 16, 2008.
In 1994, Anderson was struck by a car during a cross-country motorcycle trip, sustaining a broken leg, a broken arm, and additional health complications including an embolism. The accident kept him out of work for a year and required several years of rehabilitation.
On screen, one of his earliest major film roles came in the 1988 film Miles from Home, in which he played the brother of Richard Gere's character. He starred alongside Julia Roberts in the 1991 film Sleeping with the Enemy, and the two worked together again in the 2006 film Charlotte's Web, where Anderson played Mr. Arable while Roberts voiced the title character. On television, he portrayed a self-doubting priest in the 1997 series Nothing Sacred, a role that earned him a Golden Globe nomination. In 1999 he played the lead role of Ira Einhorn in the two-part television miniseries The Hunt for the Unicorn Killer.
Following his Broadway run, Anderson starred as Andy Dufresne in a stage adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption, which premiered at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin in May 2009 before transferring to the Wyndham's Theatre in London, where it ran from September 4 to November 29, 2009. He subsequently appeared in A Guide for the Perplexed at the Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago in July and August 2010.
