About
Kenneth Daniel Harlan was born on July 26, 1895, in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of George W. Harlan and actress Rita W. Harlan, born Sarah Wolff. His father was a brother of actor and comedian Otis Harlan, making Kenneth that performer's nephew. Harlan was educated at Saint Francis High School in Brooklyn, New York City, and later at Fordham University in the Bronx.
Harlan began performing on stage and in vaudeville at the age of seven. In 1916 he spent considerable time touring with a dance company that featured Evan-Burrows Fontaine, who would later become a Ziegfeld performer. That same year he entered motion pictures as a leading man under director D.W. Griffith. Over a career spanning roughly 25 years, Harlan accumulated credits in approximately 200 features and serials, working frequently in romantic lead and adventurer roles during the silent film era. His co-stars during that period included Constance Talmadge, Lois Weber, Mary Pickford, Katherine MacDonald, and Anna May Wong, among others. He demonstrated range across drama, comedy, and westerns.
Harlan made a successful transition to sound film, appearing in singing roles in several productions, though leading-man parts became less frequent and he worked primarily in supporting and character capacities. In 1931 he carried the lead in two film serials, Finger Prints and Danger Island. His film work continued into the 1940s, and he retired from performing in 1963.
Alongside his screen career, Harlan appeared on Broadway between 1929 and 1933, with credits that included the plays The Curtain Rises and White Flame.
Harlan was married nine times. Among his wives was silent screen star Marie Prevost. His seventh marriage was to actress and singer Helene Stanton in 1949; that marriage ended in divorce four years later. Harlan died of an acute aneurysm on March 6, 1967, in Sacramento, California, at the age of 71.
