About
Kenneth Marine Kercheval was born on July 15, 1935, in Wolcottville, Indiana, to Marine "Doc" Kercheval, a local physician, and Christine Reiber, a registered nurse. He was raised in Clinton, Indiana, and as a teenager frequently accompanied his father in the operating room, on one occasion placing two stitches in his sister Kate during her appendectomy. Rather than pursue medicine, Kercheval enrolled at Indiana University to study music and drama, later continuing his education at the University of the Pacific. Beginning in 1956, he trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City under Sanford Meisner.
Kercheval made his Broadway debut in 1962 with the play Something About a Soldier, launching a stage career that extended through 1971. His Broadway credits included the musical The Apple Tree, Cabaret — in which he replaced Bert Convy in the role of Cliff — Here's Where I Belong, Father's Day, and the comedy Happily Ever After. He also appeared off-Broadway in the 1972 Kurt Weill revue Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill, and can be heard on that production's cast recording.
Kercheval's television career began in 1966 when he took over the role of Dr. Nick Hunter on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow, replacing Burr DeBenning. He subsequently appeared in the soap operas The Secret Storm and How to Survive a Marriage. In 1976, he portrayed James Madison in two episodes of The Adams Chronicles. His film work included The Seven-Ups alongside Roy Scheider and Tony LoBianco, and F.I.S.T. with Sylvester Stallone.
He became most widely recognized for playing Cliff Barnes, the persistent rival of J.R. Ewing, on the CBS television series Dallas. Originally considered for the role of Ray Krebbs, Kercheval was ultimately cast as Barnes and appeared in the series from its pilot episode in 1978 through the finale in 1991. Along with Larry Hagman, he was one of only two cast members to remain with Dallas for its entire run, though his character held recurring rather than regular status during the first two seasons before becoming a full cast member in the 1979–1980 season. Kercheval reprised the role of Cliff Barnes in the 1996 reunion film J.R. Returns, the 2004 CBS reunion special, and again in the 2012 revival series. In 1991, he appeared in the television movie I Still Dream of Jeannie as Mr. Simpson, a high school guidance counselor. During the 1980s, he made multiple appearances on the game shows Super Password and The $25,000 Pyramid.
In 2006, Kercheval joined the cast of the musical White Christmas at Southampton's Mayflower Theatre and Plymouth's Theatre Royal, playing the General. He reprised that role in 2007 at the Edinburgh Playhouse and the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, again in Sunderland in 2010, and at The Lowry in Salford Quay from November 2012 through January 2013, the latter production featuring Coronation Street actress Wendi Peters and Brookside regular Claire Sweeney.
In 1985, Kercheval became a partner in the Old Capital Popcorn Company. The business initially succeeded, but the partnership deteriorated by 1988, and the resulting financial disputes and conflicts culminated in a 1989 armed rampage and suicide on the Dallas set by one of the partners. A lifelong smoker, Kercheval underwent surgery in 1994 to have part of his lung removed following a lung cancer diagnosis. He died of pneumonia on April 21, 2019, at the age of 83.
