About
Katharine Gratten Aldridge, known professionally as Kay Aldridge, was born on July 9, 1917, in Tallahassee, Florida, and died on January 12, 1995, in Rockport, Maine. An American actress and model, she became best known for portraying imperiled heroines in black-and-white film serials during the 1940s, and made her Broadway appearance in 1944 in the comedy Over 21.
Aldridge's father, a surveyor, died when she was two years old, after which her mother — an artist and writer — relocated the family to Lyells, Virginia, where Aldridge and her four siblings were raised with assistance from great aunts who worked as schoolteachers. She began high school in Westminster, Maryland, before enrolling at St. Mary's Female Seminary, now St. Mary's College of Maryland, in St. Mary's City. During her time there she acted in plays, played basketball, and joined the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority, graduating in 1934.
After high school, Aldridge secured work with the John Powers modeling agency in New York. Her image appeared on the covers of Life, Ladies' Home Journal, Redbook, and Look. In 1937 she was named one of the ten most photographed women in the world, a distinction that led to her being selected to appear in the United Artists film Vogues of 1938. Contemporary artist Anne Taintor later used advertisements featuring Aldridge as the basis for several of her own works.
In 1939 Aldridge signed a contract with 20th Century Fox, where she was credited as Katherine Aldridge and took on a series of minor roles. Her Fox credits include Shooting High (1940), in which she played Evelyn Trent; Sailor's Lady (1940) as Georgine; Down Argentine Way (1940) as Helen Carson; and Dead Men Tell (1941) as Laura Thursday. She was also among the actresses screen-tested for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind.
When her Fox contract expired in 1941, Republic Pictures approached her to headline a film serial. Despite viewing the work as a step down from her position at Fox, she accepted the offer for its lead role and a weekly salary of approximately $650. Her first Republic serial, Perils of Nyoka (1942), cast her — now billed as Kay Aldridge — as Nyoka Gordon, a woman searching for her father, lost on an expedition in Africa, while contending with a series of villains and cliffhanger situations at the close of each episode. The role became her most popular. She continued in the serial format with Daredevils of the West in 1943 and Haunted Harbor in 1944, before retiring from acting in 1945.
Aldridge was married three times. Her first marriage, to Arthur Cameron, lasted from 1945 to 1954. She then married Richard Derby Tucker in 1956, and remained with him until his death in 1979. Her third marriage, to Harry Nasland, took place in 1982 and ended with his death in 1983. In her later years she resided in Camden, Maine, where she was known locally as a hostess. She died of a heart attack on January 12, 1995, and is interred at Sea View Cemetery in Rockport, Maine.
