About
Katie Rose Clarke is an American musical theater actress born on August 25, 1984, in Friendswood, Texas. She holds a BFA in musical theatre from Sam Houston State University, where she trained before beginning her professional career. Her early involvement in performance came through the United Methodist Church, where she began acting and singing.
Clarke made her Broadway debut on December 9, 2005, at the age of 21, stepping into the role of Clara Johnson in The Light in the Piazza at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, performing under the name Katie Clarke. She succeeded Kelli O'Hara, who had departed the production to appear opposite Harry Connick Jr. in The Pajama Game. The role brought Clarke significant recognition, including a profile in The New York Times in January 2006, and she went on to perform the part in both the live PBS broadcast and the national tour of the show.
Her regional and off-Broadway work during this period included Craig Lucas's 2007 play Prayer for my Enemy at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut, the Deborah Abramson and William Finn musical revue Travels With My Discontent at the Barrington Stage Company, and an ensemble role in TUTS Houston's regional production of Anything Goes.
Clarke became closely associated with the role of Glinda in Wicked across multiple engagements spanning more than a decade. She first took on the part in the first national tour, succeeding Christina DeCicco on November 6, 2007, and performing alongside Carmen Cusack as Elphaba before Cusack was later replaced by her standby, Donna Vivino. Clarke departed the tour in San Diego, California, on August 16, 2009, and was replaced by Chandra Lee Schwartz. She then brought the role to Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre on January 14, 2010, replacing Erin Mackey, and performed alongside Dee Roscioli, Mandy Gonzalez, and Teal Wicks during her run. After taking medical leave in March and April 2011, during which Laura Woyasz covered the role, Clarke left the Broadway company on September 25, 2011.
She returned to the first national tour as Glinda on November 15, 2011, replacing Amanda Jane Cooper, and was joined by Kyle Dean Massey as Fiyero, a role he had also played opposite her in the Broadway production. During that tour engagement, she starred opposite Mamie Parris as Elphaba. Clarke and Massey concluded their limited engagement with the tour on February 23, 2012, with Alli Mauzey succeeding Clarke in the role. Clarke rejoined the Broadway production from April 23, 2013, to September 22, 2013, performing alongside Willemijn Verkaik and later Lindsay Mendez, and was again replaced by Mauzey upon her departure. She returned to the Broadway production of Wicked a final time beginning December 11, 2018, replacing Amanda Jane Cooper and starring opposite Jessica Vosk, playing her last performance on April 7, 2019, before being replaced by Ginna Claire Mason. Clarke holds the record for the longest-running actress to have played Glinda on Broadway.
In November 2013, Clarke made her cabaret debut at 54 Below, performing a program that included acoustic pop, folk, country, and original songs. In March 2014, she appeared in the York Theatre Company's production of the 1960 musical Tenderloin as part of their Musicals in Mufti series. That May, she returned to the Long Wharf Theatre to star as Cathy Hyatt in Jason Robert Brown's two-person musical The Last Five Years.
Clarke originated the role of Hannah in the Broadway production of Allegiance, which began performances in October 2015 and closed in February 2016. She was subsequently cast as Ellen in the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, which began performances on March 1, 2017, and closed on January 14, 2018. In 2020, she starred as Tary in the musical podcast Propaganda. Beginning in 2022, Clarke played Beth Shepard in a production of Merrily We Roll Along at the New York Theatre Workshop, and in September 2023 she reprised the role in the first Broadway revival of the show. In May 2025, Clarke was announced as one of three actresses cast to portray Dolly Parton in Dolly: An Original Musical, a jukebox musical based on Parton's life and career.
On December 15, 2012, Clarke married Christopher Alan Rogers. The couple has three children: Eleanor Rose Rogers, Jack Hardin Rogers, and Mabel Anne Rogers. Clarke is a Christian and participates in church and Bible study. The family kept a maltipoo named Samson.
