About
Kathleen Lockhart, born Kathleen Arthur on 9 August 1894 in Southsea, Hampshire, England, was an English-American actress and musician whose career on stage and screen spanned nearly four decades. She immigrated to the United States in 1924 and went on to build a substantial body of work in theatre, film, and radio. At her death on 18 February 1978 in Los Angeles, California, following a long illness, she was interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.
Lockhart began her performing career on the British stage before relocating to America. Her Broadway work ran from 1930 to 1945 and included appearances in the comedy Happily Ever After, Uncle Tom's Cabin, End of the World, and The Little Father of the Wilderness. In June 1935, she also appeared in Lea Freeman's comedy A Widow in Green, directed by Dickson Morgan and staged at Harold Lloyd's Beverly Hills Little Theatre for Professionals, a venue designed as a showcase for performers transitioning from stage to screen. The production featured Grace Stafford and Daisy Belmore among its cast.
Her film career accumulated more than 30 credits. Among the most notable was the 1938 production of A Christmas Carol, in which she and her husband, Canadian-American actor Gene Lockhart, portrayed Mr. and Mrs. Bob Cratchit opposite each other. Their daughter, June Lockhart, appeared in the same film as one of the Cratchit children. Lockhart largely retired from acting after 1957, though she returned briefly for a small role in The Purple Gang in 1960.
Beyond film and stage, Lockhart and Gene Lockhart were featured together on a radio program documented as Go Abroad with the Lockharts. Her contributions to the entertainment industry were recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 6241 Hollywood Boulevard. Her daughter June Lockhart and granddaughter Anne Lockhart both pursued acting careers of their own.
