About

Kathleen Ann Chalfant (née Bishop; born January 14, 1945) is an American actress whose career spans Broadway, Off-Broadway, television, and film. A native of San Francisco, California, she was raised in Oakland, where her family operated a boarding house. Her father, William Bishop, served as an officer in the Coast Guard. Chalfant trained as an actress in New York under Wynn Handman, a protégé of Sanford Meisner, and also studied with Alessandro Fersen in Rome.

Before establishing herself as a performer, Chalfant worked as a Production Coordinator at Playwrights Horizons in the mid-1970s, beginning with Demons: A Possession by Robert Karmon. Her Off-Broadway acting debut came in June 1974 in Cowboy Pictures, and she has since accumulated credits in more than three dozen Off-Broadway productions. Her Broadway career ran from 1975 to 1995 and included appearances in Dance With Me, M. Butterfly, Racing Demon, and both parts of Tony Kushner's Angels in America. Her role in Angels in America: Millennium Approaches earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 1993, marking her official Broadway debut as a nominated performer. A Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Play followed in 1994.

Among her most celebrated stage work is her performance as Vivian Bearing in Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit in 1998, for which she shaved her head. That performance brought her the Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Obie, and Lucille Lortel awards. In preparing for the role, Chalfant drew on her personal experience of her half-brother Alan Palmer's death from terminal cancer that same year. She received a second Obie Award for her 2003 performance in Alan Bennett's Talking Heads, and in 2018 was presented with the Obie Award for Lifetime Achievement. That same year, she performed a reading of T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets at the Bard SummerScape Festival, in a production featuring choreography by Pam Tanowitz, music by Kaija Saariaho, and images by Brice Marden.

In 2009, Chalfant appeared in The People Speak, a documentary feature film drawing on letters, diaries, and speeches of everyday Americans, based on historian Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. Her other film credits include Kinsey and Isn't It Delicious. In 2024, she played the lead role in Familiar Touch, earning both the Orizzonti Award for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival and the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actress. On television, Chalfant has held recurring roles in House of Cards, Law & Order, Rescue Me, and The Guardian, and has appeared as Margaret Butler in The Affair on Showtime.

Her theater work has continued beyond Broadway, including a 2015 appearance in the Women's Project Theater production of Dear Elizabeth by Sarah Ruhl and the role of Rose Kennedy in the Nora's Playhouse production of Rose by Laurence Leamer.

In 1966, Chalfant married Henry Chalfant, a photographer and documentary filmmaker. The couple has two children: a son, David Chalfant, who played bass for the folk-rock band The Nields, and a daughter, Andromache, a set designer based in New York.
