Katherine Locke

Katherine Locke (June 24, 1910 – September 12, 1995) was a Broadway actress born in Kalinkavičy, in what is now Kalinkavichy, Belarus, who was raised in the United States. Her father, Morris Locke, born Mendel Lakomowitz, worked as a Hebrew teacher and amateur writer. Locke trained as a pianist in her youth and initially pursued a career as a concert pianist before turning to acting.

Her early stage work consisted of minor roles, including an off-stage part as a barking dog, before she gained wider recognition. Her Broadway career spanned from 1932 to 1942 and encompassed a range of productions. The 1937 Broadway play Having Wonderful Time marked a turning point, establishing her reputation as a stage actress through her co-starring role alongside John Garfield. She later reunited with Garfield in The Fifth Column, which also featured Lee J. Cobb. Among her other Broadway credits were the drama Clash by Night, in which she appeared with Tallulah Bankhead, the drama Proof Thro' the Night, and Christmas Eve. She also appeared in a Broadway production of Hamlet, taking on the role of Ophelia.

Locke began appearing in films in the late 1930s in small parts and continued as a supporting actress in films through the 1940s and 1950s, though she is primarily remembered for her stage work. In her personal life, she married radio writer Norman Corwin in Maryland in March 1947. The couple had two children.
