About

Katharine Bard (October 19, 1916 – July 28, 1983) was an American actress whose career spanned Broadway, film, television, radio, and stage work in London and Toronto. Born in Highland Park, Illinois, she was the daughter of Ralph Bard, who served as assistant secretary of the Navy. She trained at the Embassy Dramatic School in London and the Group Theatre Studio in New York before beginning her professional career.

Bard made her Broadway debut in 1938 in All the Living and followed that with Jeremiah in 1939 and Life With Father the same year. Her subsequent Broadway appearances included Ring Around Elizabeth in 1941, the drama Lily of the Valley in 1942, and the comedy Three's a Family in 1943. She continued on Broadway through the following decade, appearing in Made in Heaven in 1946, The Hallams in 1948, I Know My Love in 1949, Pride's Crossing in 1950, and The Long Days in 1951. In addition to her New York stage work, she performed in summer theater in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Her screen career encompassed both film and an extensive body of television work. Her film appearances included The Decks Ran Red, The Interns, Johnny Cool, Inside Daisy Clover, and How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life. On television, she appeared across a wide range of programs, among them Suspense, Studio One, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, Playhouse 90, The Rifleman, Peter Gunn, The Big Valley, and The F.B.I., as well as numerous other series. In 1947–48, she played the title role in the syndicated radio series Claudia.

Bard married Martin Manulis and retired from acting following their marriage. The couple had three children. She died on July 28, 1983, at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 66, after a battle with cancer.
