About

Kate Rockwell, born Katherine Rockwell Wilfong on August 4, 1984, is an American actor, singer, and dancer. She was born in Connecticut and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, the eldest of three children born to Charles Wilfong and Linda Warner. Her two younger siblings are Elizabeth, known as Libet, and William, known as Bear. Rockwell's first theatrical experience came during her freshman year at Sycamore High School, where she was cast as Grandma Tzeitel in a school production of Fiddler on the Roof. She has cited that production as the moment she recognized musical theatre as her intended career. In 2002, while still a student at Sycamore High School, she co-founded the New Stage Collective, a Cincinnati-based theater company that operated until closing in 2009 due to lack of funding. After graduating from Sycamore in 2002, she enrolled at Baldwin Wallace University, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in musical theatre in 2006.

Following her graduation, Rockwell was cast as Philia in a production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival in Boise, Idaho, directed by her former Baldwin Wallace professor Victoria Bussert. The production subsequently transferred to the Great Lakes Theater, with Rockwell continuing in the role. In 2007, she became one of the final twelve contestants on NBC's Grease: You're the One That I Want!, a televised reality competition seeking performers to fill the lead roles of Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko in a Broadway revival of Grease directed by Kathleen Marshall. Nicknamed "Serious Sandy" during the competition, Rockwell was eliminated in fifth place, with Laura Osnes ultimately winning the role of Sandy.

Rockwell made her Broadway debut on May 15, 2008, joining Legally Blonde as Margot, replacing Haven Burton. She later reprised the role on the show's U.S. national tour for three months as a replacement for Rhiannon Hansen, who had broken her leg during a performance. In March 2010, Rockwell joined the cast of the Broadway production of Hair, remaining with the show through its closing on June 27, 2010, before continuing in the same role on the U.S. national tour.

In January 2011, Rockwell originated the role of Skylar in the world premiere of Bring It On: The Musical at the Alliance Theatre. The production, loosely based on the 2000 film of the same name, moved to a national tour later that year and then to a limited Broadway engagement running from August to December 2012. In January 2013, Rockwell returned to Broadway in Rock of Ages as Sherrie, replacing Ashley Spencer, who had also competed on Grease: You're the One That I Want! Around the time of her debut in that role, she filmed a series of video blogs for Broadway.com titled "Oh, Sherrie! Backstage at Rock of Ages with Kate Rockwell." She departed the production on April 20, 2014, and was replaced by Carrie St. Louis.

After leaving Rock of Ages, Rockwell stepped away from performing for approximately two years, during which she worked at a wine shop on the Lower East Side and earned an advanced certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust in 2016. During that same period, she appeared in regional productions, portraying Jane in The Muny's 2014 production of Tarzan opposite Nicholas Rodriguez, and returning to The Muny the following summer to star as Belle in Beauty and the Beast. In the fall of 2016, she played Carrie Pipperidge in Arena Stage's regional production of Carousel, a performance that earned her a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Musical.

It was after the close of Carousel that Rockwell booked the role of Karen Smith in Mean Girls, a Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical written by Tina Fey with music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. The production had its world premiere as an out-of-town tryout at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., running from October 31 to December 3, 2017. The Broadway production began previews on March 12, 2018, and officially opened on April 8, 2018, at the August Wilson Theatre. For her performance in the D.C. engagement, Rockwell received a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Performer in a Visiting Production. Her work in the Broadway production earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical. She remained with Mean Girls until March 8, 2020, when she was replaced by Laura Leigh Turner.

In 2018, Rockwell released a solo album titled Back to My Roots through Broadway Records. Her cast recording credits include the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Bring It On: The Musical from 2012, the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Mean Girls from 2018, and the soundtrack from the 2021 Netflix film adaptation of tick, tick... BOOM!

In her personal life, Rockwell met actor Spencer Howard in 2008 when he served as dance captain while preparing her for her entry into the Legally Blonde national tour. The two began a relationship in February 2009 and married on September 8, 2014, in Marblehead, Massachusetts. The couple resides in New York City and welcomed their first child in October 2022.
