About

Kate Nelligan, born Patricia Colleen Nelligan on March 16, 1950, in London, Ontario, Canada, is a stage, film, and television actress whose career has spanned decades across multiple countries. The fourth of six children born to Patrick Joseph Nelligan, a factory repairman and municipal employee overseeing ice rinks and recreational parks, and Josephine Alice Nelligan, a schoolteacher, she grew up attending London South Collegiate Institute, where she was known as Trish. She later enrolled at Glendon College in Toronto but left without graduating, choosing instead to pursue formal training at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, England.

Nelligan launched her professional stage career in August 1972 at the Bristol Old Vic, playing Corie in Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park. The following April, she appeared in the Bristol Old Vic studio in The Screens, an abridgement by Howard Brenton of Jean Genet's Les Paravents, taking the role of Leila. During this period she also appeared in a regular role in the British television series The Onedin Line. In 1974, she was brought to London to play Jenny in David Hare's Knuckle at the Comedy Theatre, then joined the National Theatre for a season, playing Ellie in Heartbreak House. The year 1975 brought television work opposite Anthony Hopkins in The Arcata Promise and a role in the televised The Count of Monte Cristo, as well as the release of her first feature film, The Romantic Englishwoman.

Her association with the National Theatre continued in 1977, when she played Marianne opposite Stephen Rea in Horváth's Tales from the Vienna Woods, directed by Maximilian Schell. That same year she took on the role of Rosalind in Trevor Nunn's production of As You Like It opposite Peter McEnery, performed first in Stratford-upon-Avon and then in London the following year. Also with the National Theatre, she appeared in David Hare's Plenty, earning the 1978 Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actress and a runner-up position in the Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a New Play. She subsequently appeared in Hare's companion television piece Licking Hitler for the BBC, playing opposite Bill Paterson. In 1978, her portrayal of Isabella in the BBC Television Shakespeare production of Measure for Measure drew significant critical attention. Her film work continued with the 1979 thriller Dracula, in which she starred alongside Frank Langella and Laurence Olivier, followed in 1981 by Eye of the Needle, a wartime espionage film based on Ken Follett's novel, in which she starred opposite fellow Canadian Donald Sutherland.

Nelligan relocated to New York City in the early 1980s, beginning a Broadway career that extended from 1983 to 1997. Her five Broadway productions during that period were Plenty, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Serious Money, Spoils of War, and Love Letters, with an additional appearance in An American Daughter in 1997. Her work in these productions earned her four Tony Award nominations in total. She received a nomination for Best Actress in a Play for Plenty in 1983, for A Moon for the Misbegotten in 1984, and for Spoils of War in 1989, and a nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play for Serious Money in 1988. Spoils of War, written by Michael Weller, played at the Music Box Theatre in New York.

Nelligan's screen career yielded significant recognition in 1991. That year she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Frankie and Johnny, and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in The Prince of Tides. Between 1987 and 2004, she received five Gemini Award nominations for performances in Canadian television productions, winning twice, both in 1993. In 1996, she appeared in the CBS television film Captive Heart: The James Mink Story, playing the wife of James Mink.

In her personal life, Nelligan married American composer Robert Reale in 1989. The couple have one son together and divorced in 2000.
