About

Kate L. McLaurin (1885–1933) was an American stage performer, playwright, and fiction writer whose work spanned theater, print, and film during the early twentieth century. Born in Benton, Mississippi, to William and Viola McLaurin (née Burrus), she later became associated with Yazoo City, Mississippi, as well. She pursued formal training at the Anna Morgan School in Chicago, Illinois, before embarking on a career in performance and writing.

McLaurin appeared on Broadway between 1906 and 1910, taking part in several productions during that period. Her stage credits included Caught Wet, It All Depends, When We Are Young, The Six-Fifty, and Whispering Wires, the last of which was an adaptation of a story by Henry Leverage. On July 10, 1913, she married Frederick Calvin in New York, after which she was also known as Mrs. Frederick Calvin. The couple resided in Sound Beach, Connecticut.

Alongside her theatrical work, McLaurin established herself as a fiction writer, publishing stories in periodicals including The Smart Set. Her short works included "The Muffled Clock," "The Bleep of the Spinning Top" (1916), and "The Eyes of Julia Deep" (1918). She also published a book, The Least Resistance, in 1916.

Several of McLaurin's works were adapted for the screen. The Eyes of Julia Deep was produced as a film in 1918, The Six-Fifty in 1923, Whispering Wires in 1926, and Always Goodbye in 1931. Her play Caught was produced in 1925. McLaurin died in 1933.
