About
Kate Mayhew (September 2, 1853 – June 16, 1944), also known as Katie Mayhew and Kate Mayhew Widmer, was an American actress whose career spanned stage, film, and radio. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, she died in New York at the age of 90 after a professional life that extended across more than eight decades.
Mayhew's introduction to performing came at age four, when she appeared on stage at the Metropolitan Opera House in Indianapolis. Her New York debut followed at Niblo's Garden Theatre in 1873, launching a career that would keep her active on Broadway from 1906 through 1936. During that period she appeared in numerous productions, including Vermont, Alice Takat, A Journey By Night, The Joyous Season, and The Farmer Takes a Wife, among others.
Beyond performing, Mayhew became involved in theatrical producing and acquired the rights to M'Liss, a play written by Clay M. Greene and adapted from a story by Bret Harte. She performed the title role herself at the Grand Opera House in New York in September 1878. A legal dispute over the rights to the play ultimately resulted in Annie Pixley assuming the role, to considerable critical acclaim. Mayhew also performed in Shakespearean productions, taking on the role of Juliet's Mother in Romeo and Juliet and Gertrude, Queen of Denmark, in Hamlet. In the 1890s she appeared in Oriental parts, and she worked in support of many prominent names on the Broadway stage throughout her career.
One of her final Broadway appearances came in the 1934 production of The Farmer Takes a Wife, which starred Henry Fonda and June Walker. In addition to her stage work, Mayhew appeared in films, including Tongues of Flame in 1924, and voiced characters for radio programmes. In 1930 she donated playbills and other theatre ephemera to the New York Public Library.
