About
Kat Cunning, born Katrina Cunningham on November 12, 1989, in Gresham, Oregon, is an American actor, model, dancer, singer, and musician who uses they/them pronouns. Of Greek descent and the middle of three children with two brothers, Cunning began dancing at age three. They graduated a year ahead of schedule from Centennial High School in 2007 to pursue a dance career earlier, and subsequently earned a BFA in Dance from SUNY Purchase.
Cunning launched their performance career working in Baroque-Burlesque Operas with Company XIV before making their Broadway debut in 2016. Their Broadway credits include Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Cirque du Soleil's Paramour. Beyond Broadway, Cunning performed in NYC's Sleep No More, appeared in Refinery 29's sold-out 29 Rooms, and opened for LP's sold-out North American Tour.
On screen, Cunning played the recurring role of Christina Fuego in the final two seasons of the HBO series The Deuce, which starred James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal. They starred as Sabine, a mysterious chanteuse, in the Netflix series Trinkets, based on books by Kirsten Smith, with their original songs "Birds" and "King of Shadow" featured on the show. For the 2019 Hulu adaptation of John Green's Looking for Alaska, Cunning covered Alexi Murdoch's song "Orange Sky." They also portray blackfishing white rapper Reina Reign in Issa Rae's Rap Sh!t.
As a recording artist, Cunning released the singles "Baby," "Wild Poppies," and "Stay on the Line," which received attention for their overt displays of queer sexuality. Billboard described their single "For The Love" as a rallying cry for hope and strength in the face of adversity. On August 20, 2020, Cunning signed with Lava Records.
Cunning received the Best Actor award at the 2016 Trail Dance Film Festival for Nothing Serious and the Best Supporting Actor award at the 2016 Damn! Series for Pepper and the Salt Sea. They reside in Los Angeles.
