Hensel made her Broadway debut in 1979, appearing in Zoot Suit. Her film work includes roles in Chained Heat, Faith, and Psycho III.
On television, Hensel became widely recognized for her recurring role as Doris Collins, the mother of Sharon Newman, on the soap opera The Young and the Restless. She held the role from 1994 to 2005 and returned to the series in 2009.
