About
Kenneth Todd Freeman was born on July 9, 1965, in Houston, Texas, where he attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. He went on to earn a degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 1987. A stage actor with a Broadway career spanning from 1993 to 2026, Freeman has also built a substantial presence in film and television over the course of his career.
Freeman's stage work has been anchored by a long-standing ensemble membership with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, Illinois, which he joined in 1993. That same year, his lead performance in The Song of Jacob Zulu, an Apartheid drama, earned him his first Tony Award nomination, for Best Actor in a Play. His Broadway credits also include Death of a Salesman, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Airline Highway, among other productions. For his portrayal of Sissy Na Na in Airline Highway, Freeman received his second Tony nomination, this time for Best Featured Actor in a Play, in 2015. He won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play for that same role. Freeman additionally performed in the Steppenwolf production of Downstate, which concluded its run on November 18, 2018.
Among his most sustained stage roles, Freeman played Doctor Dillamond in Wicked across the first North American tour as well as the Chicago and Broadway productions of the musical. His Broadway credits span more than three decades, reflecting a consistent presence on the New York stage.
On screen, Freeman appeared in supporting roles in the films Eraser (1996), Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), The Cider House Rules (1999), and The Dark Knight (2008). Television audiences recognized him for his recurring role as Mr. Trick on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired from 1998 to 1999. He later served as a series regular, portraying Mr. Poe in the Netflix comedy-drama A Series of Unfortunate Events from 2017 to 2019.
